Ghana has been thrown into mourning following a tragic building collapse in Accra Newtown that has claimed three lives and left several others injured.
Interior Minister Confirms Casualties
According to Ghana’s Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, three people — one male and two females — have been confirmed dead after the incident occurred near Experimental JHS on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

The collapse involved a school building, raising serious concerns about structural safety and the protection of students and residents in densely populated communities.
20 Survivors Rescued and Receiving Treatment
Authorities confirmed that a total of 23 individuals were trapped or affected by the collapse. Out of this number, 20 people have been successfully rescued and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals across Accra.
Emergency services, including the Ghana National Fire Service and other rescue teams, responded swiftly to the scene, working tirelessly to pull survivors from the debris.
Ongoing Rescue and Investigation Efforts
Rescue operations were carried out under challenging conditions, with officials racing against time to save those trapped beneath the rubble. Authorities have since secured the area as investigations begin into the cause of the collapse.
Preliminary concerns point to possible structural weaknesses or non-compliance with building regulations — an issue that has plagued parts of the capital in recent years.
Why This Story Matters
This tragedy once again highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of building codes and regular inspections, especially for structures used by schools and vulnerable populations.
Incidents like this continue to raise national questions about urban planning, safety enforcement, and accountability. As families mourn the lives lost, many Ghanaians are demanding decisive action to prevent future disasters.
The government is expected to provide further updates as investigations progress and support measures are rolled out for victims and affected families.
