Afua Kyei, a Ghanaian-born financial powerhouse and Chief Financial Officer of the Bank of England, has been named the most influential Black person in the United Kingdom, topping the prestigious 2025 Powerlist.
As one of the Bank’s Executive Directors, Kyei has been instrumental in strengthening the UK’s financial governance and steering a balance sheet that surpassed £1 trillion during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her visionary leadership and strategic oversight have been praised globally for helping maintain stability during turbulent financial times.
The annual Powerlist celebrates people of African, African-Caribbean, and African-American heritage who are driving change and excellence across multiple sectors in the UK — from business and politics to science, arts, and education.
Reacting to the honour, Kyei expressed her joy at being recognized for her work in the public sector, noting that such recognition demonstrates the growing visibility of Black excellence in finance and leadership.
