Mahama Visits Flood-Hit Hohoe, Donates Relief Items

President John Dramani Mahama has visited communities affected by the recent flooding in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region, expressing solidarity with residents and presenting relief items to support households affected by the disaster.

The visit took place on Friday, October 2, 2026, as authorities continued assessing the impact of flooding that followed heavy rainfall and the overflow of the River Dayi. Hohoe Zongo and other low-lying communities were among the areas affected. 

5,140 people affected

Preliminary figures from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) indicate that about 5,140 people have been affected, with 412 houses impacted across 11 communities. Some buildings and other structures were completely destroyed by the floodwaters. 

The affected areas include Hohoe Zongo and several other communities in the municipality. The flooding followed intense rainfall, with reports indicating that water flowing down the River Dayi from neighbouring Togo contributed to the inundation of low-lying areas.

Mahama said he learnt about the disaster while returning from New York, where he had attended the United Nations, and decided to visit the affected communities to sympathise with residents and assess the situation. 

Relief supplies delivered

The Presidency donated a range of relief supplies to affected residents. The Information Services Department said the consignment included 2,500 bags of 25-kilogramme rice, 243 mattresses, 1,250 blankets, 200 cartons of mackerel and other essential items, alongside relief boxes of assorted food from the MTN Ghana Foundation. 

The Ghana News Agency also reported that the relief package included washing products, roofing sheets, sanitary pads, baby diapers, tissue paper, plastic basins, buckets and other household essentials. 

The President asked local authorities to ensure that the items were distributed fairly among people affected by the floods. 

Support for rebuilding

Additional assistance has also been announced for households whose homes were destroyed or collapsed. Ibrahim Mahama, the President’s brother and businessman, has pledged 5,000 bags of Dzata Cement to support reconstruction, according to multiple reports. 

Mahama also linked the increasing unpredictability of extreme rainfall and flooding to changing weather patterns associated with climate change.

The disaster has prompted calls for continued relief support and longer-term measures to improve flood resilience in vulnerable communities.

Hohoe hospital remains operational

The statement supplied for this report also noted that the Hohoe Adabraka Hospital, which was renovated, expanded and equipped by the Lordina Foundation, was not affected by the floodwaters and remains operational.

The flooding has nevertheless left many families facing displacement, damaged homes and the loss of household belongings, with relief and recovery efforts continuing in the affected communities.
