Ghana’s Glorification of Ibrahim Traoré Triggered Tomato Traders Attack – Nitiwul

Nitiwul Links Burkina Faso Attack to Regional Political Tensions

Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has suggested that Ghana’s public glorification of Burkina Faso’s leader, Ibrahim Traoré, may have indirectly contributed to the recent attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso. According to him, heightened political sentiments and regional tensions could have played a role in the targeting of Ghanaian nationals.

Background to the Tomato Traders Attack

The attack, which occurred in northern Burkina Faso, left several Ghanaian tomato traders injured after armed assailants ambushed their vehicle. The victims were reportedly transporting goods when the incident happened. Survivors are currently receiving treatment, while authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Concerns Over Regional Security Dynamics

Nitiwul’s comments highlight growing concerns about security volatility across the Sahel region. Burkina Faso, under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré following the 2022 coup, has experienced persistent insurgent activity and strained regional diplomatic relations.

Security analysts argue that extremist violence and broader instability in the Sahel — rather than public sentiment alone — remain the primary drivers of such attacks. However, Nitiwul believes rhetoric and political narratives across borders can sometimes inflame already fragile situations.

Calls for Diplomatic Caution

Observers are urging diplomatic restraint and careful public discourse to avoid exacerbating tensions between neighbouring states. Ghana and Burkina Faso share longstanding trade and security ties, and both countries continue to collaborate on counterterrorism efforts in the subregion.

Authorities in both countries are expected to strengthen intelligence cooperation to prevent further incidents and protect civilians engaged in cross-border trade.
