In an emotional revelation, the renowned singer recounted an encounter with former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, whose comment left her deeply hurt and ultimately ended her musical dedication to the team.

Speaking about the incident, Grace Ashley recalled:

“Wherever Stephen Appiah is, he should listen to me and remember that day at the airport. Ghana had a match with Gambia in Kumasi. At that time, the Black Stars’ morale was low, and a promoter had to mobilize fans to support the team. On our way back, we boarded the same flight with Stephen Appiah.”

According to her, the situation took a painful turn when a man at the car park praised her for her contribution to the national team, telling Appiah that her music had inspired many Ghanaians — especially women — to support football.

“At the car park, a man approached him and said, ‘Well done, Stephen. This woman is like your sister — you guys should take care of her. She’s the reason many women have started watching football because of her songs for the Black Stars.’

Stephen responded, ‘But the songs she sings are for the state.’

The man replied, ‘But the state doesn’t pay her anything.’

And Stephen said, ‘If you’re working for someone and you’re not paid, stop it,’” Grace Ashley narrated.

The comment, she said, shattered her spirit.

“Those words broke my heart,” she admitted. “That was the moment I decided to stop making songs for the Black Stars.”

Grace Ashley, who became a household name for her patriotic and motivational songs during the Black Stars’ golden years, revealed that she had produced several tracks solely out of passion and national pride — without receiving any financial reward.

Operation Contender 3.0: INTERPOL Cracks Down on Romance Scams and Sextortion Across 14 African Nations

What happened

A major coordinated cybercrime operation led by INTERPOL—dubbed Operation Contender 3.0—has resulted in the arrest of 260 suspects across 14 African countries. The large-scale sweep, conducted between July 28 and August 11, 2025, targeted organized networks behind romance scams and sextortion schemes that defrauded thousands of victims across the continent and beyond.

What was targeted

The operation focused on two rapidly growing online crimes:

Romance scams: Fraudsters create fake online relationships to emotionally manipulate victims into sending money or sharing personal details. Sextortion: Criminals trick victims into sharing explicit content, then blackmail them for money under threat of public exposure.

Scale and results

The crackdown led to 260 arrests, the seizure of 1,235 electronic devices, and the dismantling of 81 cyber infrastructures. Investigators identified over 1,400 victims, with estimated losses of more than USD 2.8 million linked to the fraudulent activities.

Country breakdown

In Ghana, 68 suspects were arrested for creating fake profiles, using stolen images, and engaging in sextortion schemes. Authorities identified about 108 victims and recorded financial losses of approximately USD 450,000, recovering about USD 70,000.

In Senegal, 22 individuals were arrested for impersonating celebrities and manipulating victims through emotional deception, with over 120 victims and financial losses of around USD 34,000 reported.

In Côte d’Ivoire, 24 people were arrested for creating fake online identities and blackmailing victims using intimate materials, with roughly 809 victims identified.

In Angola, 8 suspects were detained for social media–based scams and the use of forged documents to deceive and steal from victims both locally and internationally.

Other participating nations included Benin, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Guinea, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia.

Items seized and digital tracing

Authorities recovered mobile phones, laptops, USB drives, forged ID documents, and numerous SIM cards. Investigators tracked IP addresses, domains, and social media accounts linked to scam operations. Data sharing and intelligence coordination took place through INTERPOL’s Cyber Fusion Centre, with cybersecurity partners like Group-IB and Trend Micro providing technical support.

Why it matters

INTERPOL highlighted a sharp increase in romance scams and sextortion across Africa, driven by growing internet access and the popularity of online dating platforms. These crimes not only cause severe financial losses but also lead to deep emotional and psychological trauma for victims, many of whom remain silent due to fear or shame.

Official comment

INTERPOL’s African Cybercrime Operations Desk commended the operation’s success, describing it as a “powerful message that online criminals cannot hide behind screens.” National police agencies are continuing investigations, with efforts to prosecute offenders and return recovered funds to victims.

Accra, Ghana – Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, a prominent Igbo leader residing in Ghana, has instituted legal action against politician Hassan Ayariga, filing a defamation suit at the Accra High Court.

According to court documents filed on October 1, 2025, the lawsuit stems from statements made by Ayariga in a July 19 interview, during which he allegedly labeled Ihenetu a “scammer” and accused him of involvement in money laundering, human trafficking, prostitution, and other crimes. 

Eze Ihenetu, who has lived in Ghana for over three decades and operates various business interests in both Ghana and Nigeria, argues that the allegations are false and malicious, and that they have severely damaged his reputation. 

In his suit, Ihenetu is seeking a GHS 50 million award in general damages, USD 5.6 million in special damages (citing cancelled business contracts), a public apology via media, and a perpetual injunction that would bar Ayariga from repeating the alleged statements. 

He also asks the court to declare the statements defamatory and to compel Ayariga to retract and apologize through the same media channels in which the remarks were made. 

A legal team led by Muniru M. Kassim from Obour, Minta & Co. is representing Ihenetu. The court has reportedly ordered Ayariga to enter appearance within eight days after being served.
