Her professional journey also includes serving as Information Security Manager at Kadant Inc., overseeing global cybersecurity operations across North and South America, Europe and Asia. She has also held technology and security roles with Vehicle Inspection & Technical Org, Symetra Financial Services, Microsoft through HCL America and organisations within the media and healthcare sectors.

Her impressive professional certifications include CRISC, CISM, CISA, Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), CompTIA Security+, CCSK, ITIL, CCNP and CCNA.

Funds in Customer MoMo Wallets Are Protected Through Regulated Bank Trust Accounts — MMFL’s Godwin Tamakloe

Accra, Ghana – July 28, 2026 — MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MMFL) has reassured millions of mobile money users in Ghana that funds stored in their MoMo wallets are secure because the physical cash backing every electronic balance is held in regulated trust accounts with partner banks under the supervision of the Bank of Ghana.

Speaking during JoyNews’ Digital Economy Forum, the Chief Regulatory, Risk and Compliance Officer of MMFL, Godwin Kwami Tamakloe, explained that many Ghanaians misunderstand how the mobile money ecosystem operates, leading to unnecessary concerns about the safety of their wallet balances.

The forum, themed “The Trust Crisis: Why Fraud is Holding Back Ghana’s Digital Economy,” brought together regulators, banks, fintech companies, cybersecurity professionals, and industry leaders to discuss practical ways of strengthening public confidence in Ghana’s digital financial services.

According to Mr. Tamakloe, although customers access their funds through mobile money platforms, the actual cash equivalent of every electronic balance is securely deposited in regulated trust accounts managed by partner banks.

“The electronic money generated is not held by the Payment Service Providers or dedicated electronic money issuers like us. They all go to the bank,” he stated.

He stressed that this regulatory framework ensures customer funds remain protected regardless of the platform used to access them.

Mr. Tamakloe further assured customers that even if a mobile money platform experiences technical challenges or temporary service interruptions, users would not lose the money stored in their wallets because the underlying funds remain safely held by the banking institutions.

“Mobile money is just the channel. The Payment Service Providers are simply the channels through which customers access their funds,” he added.

He emphasized that banks and fintech companies are partners within Ghana’s interconnected financial ecosystem, working together under Bank of Ghana regulations to safeguard customer funds and maintain confidence in digital financial services.

Industry Leaders Call for Greater Collaboration

Other panellists echoed the importance of collaboration in addressing fraud and protecting consumers.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Association of Banks, John Awuah, noted that commercial banks increasingly rely on digital channels provided by Payment Service Providers, making cooperation between banks and fintech firms essential in tackling financial fraud.

Deputy Director-General for Technical Operations at the Cyber Security Authority, Stephen Cudjoe-Seshie, highlighted the growing sophistication of cyber threats and urged stronger cybersecurity awareness alongside closer cooperation between regulators, financial institutions, and technology companies.

Economist Professor Godfred Bokpin of the University of Ghana Business School described trust as a critical pillar of digital financial inclusion, warning that persistent fraud could slow Ghana’s digital transformation if public confidence weakens.

Additional contributions came from Ebenezer Boffour, Head of Internal Affairs at Hubtel, and Elhanan Owureku Asare, Head of the FinTech and Innovation Department at the Bank of Ghana, both of whom advocated stronger collaboration across the financial ecosystem to enhance consumer protection while encouraging innovation.

The panel concluded that sustained public education, effective regulation, and continued cooperation among regulators, banks, fintech companies, and consumers will be essential in maintaining trust and accelerating Ghana’s digital economy.

Two Men Arrested for Allegedly Dumping Waste in Achimota Forest Reserve

Two adult men have been arrested by the Forest Services Division (FSD) of the Forestry Commission for allegedly attempting to dump rubbish inside the protected Achimota Forest Reserve in Accra.

According to information shared by the Forestry Commission and widely circulated online, forest security personnel acted on intelligence indicating that the suspects were transporting waste into the reserve for illegal disposal. Officers moved swiftly to the scene, intercepted the suspects, and arrested them before the alleged dumping could be carried out. 

A video that has since gone viral on social media shows the two men in handcuffs repeatedly saying, “We will not dump rubbish here again,” while apparently being reprimanded following their arrest. The footage has sparked widespread public discussion, with many Ghanaians praising authorities for taking action to protect one of the country’s important urban forest reserves.

The Achimota Forest Reserve plays a significant role in preserving biodiversity, improving air quality, and serving as a vital green space within the Greater Accra Region. Environmental advocates have long warned against illegal dumping, encroachment, and other activities that threaten the reserve’s ecosystem. 

The Forestry Commission continues to urge the public to dispose of waste responsibly and report anyone engaging in activities that threaten Ghana’s protected forests.

The atmosphere throughout the evening was filled with heartfelt worship as hundreds lifted their voices in praise while the live recording captured memorable moments that are expected to bless audiences worldwide upon release.

Speaking after the event, Gina Doe Ministries expressed gratitude to everyone who attended, supported and partnered to make BARAK FESTIVAL 2026 a success.

The ministry also thanked the leadership and chaplaincy of the Accra College of Education for their collaboration in hosting the impactful worship gathering.

The case, which has generated widespread public attention, follows investigations into allegations that victims were deceived through promises of love, marriage and spiritual intervention before allegedly being defrauded of significant sums of money. Prosecutors contend that the accused used false identities and deceptive representations to lure victims into the alleged scheme.

Maxima Media Group unveils continent-wide Foodies Choice Awards

Maxima Media Group has officially launched the maiden edition of the Foodies Choice Awards, introducing what it describes as Africa’s first consumer-driven recognition platform dedicated to celebrating excellence across the continent’s food and agriculture value chain.

The initiative, launched on July 17, 2026, opens nominations simultaneously in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda, marking the beginning of a Pan-African awards scheme designed to honour governments, farmers, agribusinesses, chefs, food brands, hospitality operators, media personalities and innovators contributing to Africa’s food economy.

The launch comes as Ghana continues to strengthen its agricultural sector under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama, with renewed efforts focused on food security, agro-processing, value addition, youth participation in agriculture and industrial development.

Foodies Choice Awards opens nominations across five African countries.

Agriculture remains one of Ghana’s most important economic sectors, contributing significantly to national GDP while supporting millions of livelihoods through cocoa, horticulture and other high-value agricultural products.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has also intensified efforts to promote Ghanaian cuisine through initiatives including the 2026 Afro-Gastro Festival, positioning food as a major tourism and economic asset.

According to the organisers, the Foodies Choice Awards differs from traditional industry awards by allowing consumers to determine nominees and winners through a transparent public nomination and voting process.

The inaugural edition will feature 50 award categories across six sectors, including Agriculture, Chef and Culinary, Tourism and Hospitality, Food Brands, Media, and Food Support Services.

Consumers across the participating countries can now submit nominations for individuals, organisations and institutions that have made meaningful contributions to the food industry and their communities.

Speaking during the launch, Maxima Media Group Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer, Oluwafemi Ogundoro, described the initiative as a transformational platform capable of strengthening Africa’s food economy, which is projected to reach US$1 trillion by 2030.

He said the awards would empower consumers by giving them a direct voice in recognising excellence throughout Africa’s food value chain while encouraging credibility, innovation and sustainable growth.

To reinforce transparency, international professional services firm KPMG has been appointed as the official Assurance Partner for the awards. The firm will independently oversee the nomination, validation and public voting processes across all participating countries.

According to information circulating online and statements attributed to the suspect, he allegedly used the stolen money to repay an outstanding Qwikloan debt. He reportedly hoped that clearing the debt would enable him to qualify for another loan, which he intended to use to replace the stolen funds.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many Ghanaians expressing concern over the growing sophistication of mobile money fraud and urging users to remain vigilant when conducting transactions.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft to establish the full facts of the case. At this stage, the allegations have not been tested in court, and the suspect remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty through due process.
