The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is preparing to meet with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to discuss the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Ghana Premier League.
This crucial two-day meeting is set for October 31 and November 1, 2024, in Accra, with FIFA’s full VAR project team present.
VAR aims to address Ghana’s officiating controversies
During these discussions, GFA and FIFA representatives will review the technical, logistical, and regulatory aspects necessary for implementing VAR. If approved, VAR technology will assist referees in minimizing “clear and obvious errors,” improving decision-making on goals, penalties, and red card calls.
Adopting VAR could restore fan confidence and boost viewership by ensuring fair play and transparency. Additionally, knowing that actions on the field are closely monitored may foster better discipline among players and coaches, promoting a more competitive league.
