Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will return to government in 2028 under the leadership of the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking in a video message played during the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, the former President urged the party to unite behind its new national leadership and prepare for the 2028 general elections.
Akufo-Addo said the NPP could repeat its electoral successes of 2000 and 2016, expressing confidence that the party would regain power with Dr Bawumia as its presidential candidate.
“With God’s guidance we will emerge victorious as we did in 2000 and 2016 and form the government in 2028 with Dr Bawumia,” he said.
His remarks came as NPP delegates gathered at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for the party’s National Delegates Conference and the election of new national officers.
Akufo-Addo urged the incoming leadership to rise above sectional interests and focus on rebuilding the party’s structures from the grassroots to the national level.
He said the task ahead would require energy, time, determination and loyalty from party members as the NPP seeks to recover from its defeat in the 2024 general election.
The former President’s endorsement adds to calls within the NPP for unity behind Dr Bawumia as the party prepares for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections. The party’s flagbearer has previously said unity will be a key ingredient in the NPP’s bid to return to power.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin also expressed confidence during the conference, telling party members that “come 2028, we shall prevail.” Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, in a video message, similarly said Ghana needs the NPP to lead the country toward prosperity and transformation.
The NPP is expected to use the reorganisation of its national leadership and party structures as a foundation for its preparations for the 2028 elections.
