British police have launched a fresh manhunt after 21-year-old Daniel Boakye, a prisoner due to be deported to Ghana, escaped from hospital custody for the second time in less than a week.
Second Escape in Days
Boakye, an inmate at HMP Feltham, reportedly fled from Lewisham Hospital in south-east London at around 3:05pm on Sunday, February 15, while under police guard and receiving medical treatment.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers gave chase but were unable to detain him before he left the hospital building.
“We are searching for a 21-year-old man who absconded from Lewisham Hospital at around 15:05hrs on Sunday, 15 February,” the spokesperson said.
Escaped Days After Previous Arrest
The latest incident occurred just days after Boakye previously escaped from West Middlesex University Hospital, where he had been taken under supervision.
He was rearrested at an address in south-east London on Wednesday afternoon. However, while in police custody and receiving treatment at Lewisham Hospital on Sunday, he managed to flee again.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that its Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and that a review is underway to establish how the second escape occurred.
Serving Sentence Before Deportation
Boakye is currently serving a prison term for a string of knifepoint robberies. He had been scheduled for deportation to Ghana in the coming months.
Police describe him as black, of medium height and slim build. At the time of his escape, he was reportedly wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a dark Nike jacket.
Members of the public have been advised not to approach him but to contact authorities with any information regarding his whereabouts.
