Defilement Suspect Allegedly Commits Suicide While In Police Custody In Central Region

A 38-year-old man arrested over an alleged defilement case has reportedly died by suspected suicide while in police custody at Agyei Krom in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Municipality of Ghana’s Central Region.

According to reports by Citi Newsroom, the deceased suspect, identified as Emmanuel Cudjoe, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday, May 10, 2026, over allegations that he had defiled his 11-year-old stepdaughter.

Police sources say officers later received information from the station counter Non-Commissioned Officer that the suspect had allegedly hanged himself inside the police cell using a thin cloth reportedly removed from the edge of a blanket.

Regional Crime Team Investigates Incident

The Elmina District Police Command together with the Central Regional Crime Management Team reportedly visited the scene shortly after the incident was discovered.

Authorities said the suspect was found hanging against a wall with the ligature firmly tied around his neck. No visible physical injuries were reportedly found on his body during the initial examination.

The body was subsequently transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead before the remains were deposited at the hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

Family members of the deceased have reportedly been informed as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the death in custody.

Incident Sparks Public Reactions Online

The case has already triggered widespread debate across social media, with many Ghanaians questioning how the suspect allegedly managed to take his own life while under police supervision.

Others are calling for a full independent investigation to determine exactly what transpired inside the police cell before the incident occurred.

The tragic development has once again renewed discussions surrounding detention conditions, police monitoring systems, and custodial safety procedures across the country.
