GAF: “We will not condone any military assault on civilians” — soldier arrested after viral pharmacy assault

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the arrest of a soldier shown in a viral video assaulting a pharmacy attendant and a female customer at a shop near Burma Camp in Accra. The arrest was carried out by the Ghana Military Police on Thursday, October 30, 2025, the Armed Forces said in a statement.

According to the GAF statement — signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director of the Department of Public Relations — the suspect, identified in media reports as Warrant Officer Class One Williams (William) Mensah, is assisting investigators while the case is processed. The statement added that the victims have received medical attention and are cooperating with the probe.

“The Armed Forces assures the general public that it will not condone any acts of assault on civilians and will not shield any soldier engaged in such behaviour,” the statement said, stressing the GAF’s commitment to discipline and professionalism among its ranks. The footage — first circulated on GhOne TV and widely shared on social media — showed the soldier assaulting the pharmacy attendant and striking a female customer who attempted to record the incident.

The Defence Press Corps and other military commentators have urged the public to allow due process to take its course, and described the incident as an isolated breach that does not reflect the institution’s overall character. Meanwhile public reaction on social media has been strong, with calls for swift accountability and transparent handling of the investigation.
