The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is set to receive a major boost to its firefighting capacity, with the first batch of 100 new fire tenders expected by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak announced the development as government intensifies efforts to retool the Service and improve emergency response across the country. The announcement was reported by GHOne TV on August 27, 2026.
The planned acquisition forms part of government’s broader programme to address the ageing and inadequate equipment currently confronting the GNFS.
Government moves to strengthen firefighting capacity
The commitment to procure 100 fire tenders was already outlined in the 2026 Budget, which stated that government would retool the Ghana National Fire Service with 100 fire tenders and assorted firefighting equipment for distribution across the country.
Government also indicated that it would work with the private sector to bring in specialised high-rise firefighting equipment, with the broader objective of improving the Service’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
The Interior Ministry subsequently confirmed in May that processes were far advanced for the procurement of the 100 fire engines and additional rescue equipment.
A long-standing equipment challenge
The announcement comes against the backdrop of concerns about the condition and availability of firefighting equipment across the country.
The 2026 Budget itself acknowledged that the Ghana National Fire Service lacked basic equipment needed to effectively perform its mandate of protecting lives and property.
Regional authorities have also highlighted the challenge.
In August, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene said government was committed to retooling the GNFS with 100 new fire tenders, describing the intervention as necessary in addressing challenges posed by ageing equipment.
Recent support for the Fire Service
The planned procurement follows other efforts to strengthen the Service.
In May 2026, government commissioned several utility vehicles for the GNFS, including Toyota Hiace minibuses, Nissan Navara pickups and a Toyota Camry. The Interior Minister said the vehicles were intended to improve mobility and emergency response.
The Service also received a Mercedes-Benz fire tender and firefighting equipment donated by Fire Aid & International Development in the United Kingdom, with the handover taking place in May.
Beyond physical equipment, the government has been pursuing technological reforms. The GNFS launched the Automated Fire Safety Compliance System (AFCAS) to digitise fire-safety inspections, certification and compliance monitoring.
What the 100 tenders could mean
If delivered as announced, the new fire tenders could significantly improve the operational reach of firefighters across Ghana.
The additional vehicles are expected to provide greater capacity for responding to fires in residential areas, markets, industrial facilities and other high-risk locations, while reducing pressure on ageing equipment already in service.
However, the effectiveness of the investment will ultimately depend not only on the number of new tenders delivered but also on their distribution, maintenance, staffing, fuel availability and operational readiness.
For communities that have repeatedly raised concerns about delayed firefighting response, the arrival of the new equipment will therefore be closely watched.
With the first batch now expected by the end of Q1 2027, attention will shift to whether the procurement timeline is met and how quickly the equipment can be deployed nationwide.
