Guinness World Records deactivates its ‘cookathon’ category

Chef Ebenezer Smith has generated significant online discussion by claiming the world record for the longest cooking marathon. At a recent press conference, he showcased a certificate, asserting his successful attempt.

The situation has been complicated by the Guinness World Records (GWR) website, which has added confusion to Chef Smith’s claim.

Ghana launched its second cooking marathon attempt on February 1, with Chef Smith stepping in after Failatu Abdul Razak’s initial try fell short. Cooking non-stop for 35 days in Spintex, Smith clocked an impressive 820 hours, concluding on March 1.

At the press conference, Chef Smith announced himself as the new record holder, causing a stir similar to the excitement around Afua Asantewaa’s singing marathon.

However, a recent update from GWR has added a twist: the organization has deactivated the cook-a-thon category entirely.

This development casts doubt on Chef Smith’s claim, as the GWR’s decision to end the category introduces uncertainty about the legitimacy of his achievement.
