Spanish forward Nico Williams has expressed his admiration for Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan. The Athletic Bilbao star, who has Ghanaian heritage, recalls watching the former Black Stars captain as a child.
Williams, younger brother of Ghanaian striker Inaki Williams, shone brightly for Spain in the recent European Championship, scoring and earning the Man of the Match award in the final against England.
During an interview with 3 Sports on his visit to Ghana, Williams highlighted Gyan’s influence on his career. “When I was about six years old, I admired Asamoah Gyan. He is our best striker, scoring numerous goals. I loved Asamoah Gyan,” Williams revealed.
Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances, also holds the record for the most World Cup goals by an African player. Gyan retired from professional football last year at the age of 38.
With an uncertain future at Bilbao, Nico Williams seems ready to carve out his own legendary path in football, having played a pivotal role in securing Spain’s fourth European Championship title.
