Telecel Ghana has increased its capital investment by 60 per cent between 2023 and 2026 compared with the preceding four years, Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George has disclosed.

According to Samuel Nartey George, the increase reflects Telecel Ghana’s growing commitment to Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure, particularly efforts to improve network quality and expand coverage nationwide.

He said the development represents a significant rise in capital investment since Telecel Ghana’s transition, with investment before the transition standing at approximately US$893 million, compared with current levels of about US$1.4 billion and moving towards US$1.5 billion.

Telecel Ghana upgrading about 2,900 sites

As part of the investment programme, Telecel Ghana is undertaking approximately 2,900 site upgrades across its network.

The upgrades include the migration of network infrastructure from 3G to 4G, a move aimed at expanding access to faster mobile broadband services and strengthening network performance.

The Communications Minister said the upgrades form part of the company’s broader strategy to modernise its network infrastructure and improve service delivery.

The investment comes as Ghana continues to place greater emphasis on digital connectivity and telecommunications infrastructure as foundations for economic activity.

Minister highlights importance of private-sector investment

Samuel Nartey George described the growth in Telecel Ghana’s investment as evidence of the importance of sustained private-sector participation in the telecommunications sector.

He noted that the company is committing significantly more resources to its network than during the preceding period, describing the development as important to the continued expansion and modernisation of Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure.

His comments come amid broader government efforts to strengthen the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and create conditions that encourage operators to invest in network expansion and digital connectivity.

What the upgrades could mean for customers

Reliable telecommunications infrastructure remains essential to businesses, households and public services, particularly as Ghana’s digital economy continues to expand.

With approximately 2,900 sites undergoing upgrades, the investment is expected to strengthen Telecel Ghana’s 4G footprint and improve the quality and availability of mobile connectivity for customers across the country.

The development also highlights the growing importance of continued investment in network capacity as demand for mobile broadband and digital services increases.

For Ghana, stronger telecommunications infrastructure could support businesses, digital services and everyday connectivity while contributing to the wider development of the country’s digital economy.
