Popular Ghanaian broadcaster, Afia Pokua, also known as Vim Lady, has suggested that the Democracy Hub’s anti-galamsey protest was politically motivated.
She believes that such demonstrations are often orchestrated by opposition parties to tarnish the government’s image, particularly during election years.
In a video shared on her TikTok handle, Vim Lady supported the call for the release of protesters but criticized the illegal acts that led to their arrests.
She mentioned past demonstrations, such as Kume Preko and Let My Vote Count, as examples of politically driven protests.
The Democracy Hub protest, held from September 21 to 23, 2024, aimed to combat galamsey. However, it resulted in the arrest of several protesters, including Oliver Barker-Vormawor, on charges related to unlawful assembly and offensive conduct.
