South African music icon, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, known as the “Princess of Africa,” has called on Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo to enforce his promises to curb illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
The issue, which also affects South Africa, is causing environmental devastation and harming youth livelihoods.
Chaka Chaka emphasized the need to restore Ghana’s forests and rehabilitate the destroyed lands.
She mentioned an upcoming Global Citizen meeting in Ivory Coast, where she plans to personally address President Akufo-Addo, urging him to “walk the talk” and take concrete steps to end the galamsey crisis.
Chaka Chaka stressed that Ghana’s youth are awaiting real solutions, adding that the benefits of natural resources should be enjoyed by everyone, and access to clean water must be protected.
She urged the president to listen to the people’s concerns and take action.
