Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has called for greater consistency in Ghana’s squad selection, saying the national team cannot build a winning side when too many players are changed from one international camp to another.
Speaking ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia, Queiroz stressed the importance of developing a settled core of players who can build understanding, trust and continuity within the team.
“You cannot build a winning team if you change seven, eight, nine players every call-up,” Queiroz said, according to the Ghana Football Association.
The Portuguese coach said Ghana’s ambitions must go beyond qualifying for major tournaments occasionally, arguing that sustained success requires a systematic approach and a stable group of players.
“You have to be consistent. You have to be systematic,” Queiroz said, adding that Ghana needs to produce more generations capable of competing regularly for major honours.
His comments come after Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening Group C match of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. The Black Stars are scheduled to face The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, with the match kicking off at 4:00pm GMT. The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that 22 players are ready for the encounter.
Queiroz has also faced squad changes during the current international window, with several players unavailable because of injuries and medical concerns. The GFA previously confirmed the addition of nine players to the squad ahead of the qualifiers against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia and a friendly against Morocco.
The coach said building a successful national team also requires stronger coordination between the Ghana Football Association, technical team and players, with availability, commitment and accountability playing important roles.
For Ghana, the immediate task is to respond against The Gambia while continuing the longer-term process of establishing a settled Black Stars squad.
