Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata has declared that no international accolade, including the prestigious Grammy Awards, can surpass the honour he received from Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

On May 9, 2025, Kinaata was presented with the Youth in Entertainment Award at the Otumfuo Millennium Excellence Awards held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The award recognizes individuals whose work has significantly contributed to national development and societal progress.

In an interview on Angel FM, Kinaata described the recognition as the pinnacle of his career. He explained that while the Grammys focus primarily on rewarding musical achievements, the Asantehene’s award acknowledges a broader societal impact.

“Grammy awards are primarily given to musicians, but the award Otumfuo bestowed is unique and stands out. You could sing your entire life and still not receive it, which I consider more prestigious than the Grammys,” Kinaata said.

He also noted that receiving the award has opened new opportunities, expanded his fanbase, and granted him access to platforms and shows previously unavailable to him.

Otumfuo himself has commended Kinaata’s artistry in the past, particularly praising his song “Susuka” as “full of wisdom” during the Ghana Bar Association’s General Conference in 2024.

Other notable awardees at the ceremony included Dr. Osei Kwame Despite of Despite Group, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong of Special Ice Water, and Dr. Nick Danso of Ghana Link Network Services.

Kinaata’s remarks underscore the value of local recognition and the profound respect Ghanaian artists hold for traditional institutions, highlighting the deep cultural significance of awards beyond global fame.
