Google Partners with Ghana to Launch Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani AI Tools for Education

Google & Ghana Expand AI Education Access in Local Languages

Ghana has entered a strategic partnership with global tech giant Google to introduce advanced AI‑powered educational tools designed in local languages, including Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani. This initiative is part of the country’s broader vision to improve education accessibility and digital learning for all learners, especially those in underserved or rural communities and students with disabilities.

The partnership announcement came during the Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom, where Ghana’s Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, engaged with Google officials. He revealed that Google is collaborating with the University of Ghana and the GDI Hub to develop speech recognition and AI tools tailored to Ghanaian languages, placing special emphasis on handling non‑standard speech patterns to improve understanding and usability in educational contexts.

A key component of the collaboration is the zero‑rated deployment of Google’s education tools in Ghana, meaning that students and educators can access curriculum‑aligned AI resources without internet data charges, enhancing equitable access across socioeconomic groups.

Google’s support is part of a larger commitment to Africa’s digital transformation. In July 2025, the company announced a US$37 million investment in AI research and digital skills development across the continent, including the launch of a new AI Community Center in Accra — a hub for innovation, training, and AI research. This investment forms part of Google’s US$1 billion pledge to strengthen Africa’s position in the global AI ecosystem.

Officials also noted the importance of expanding the language initiative to include Hausa, a widely spoken language in Ghana and West Africa, to further deepen regional inclusion and reinforce Ghana’s role as a leader in AI innovation on the continent.

This collaboration reflects Ghana’s growing reputation as an AI education pioneer in Africa and underscores the role of localized AI tools in shaping inclusive and culturally relevant learning experiences for students across the country.
