Ghanaian athlete Saminu Abdul Rasheed has publicly criticized the Ministry of Sports over what he describes as poor travel arrangements that are negatively affecting the performance of national athletes on the international stage.

In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), Rasheed expressed frustration over long travel hours and inadequate planning, stating that athletes are being forced to compete under physically exhausting conditions.

“We Are Running With Jet Lag”
According to Rasheed, Team Ghana athletes endured a grueling 14-hour flight followed by a 16-hour layover, leaving them fatigued and underprepared ahead of crucial competitions.
“The Ministry of Sports in Ghana needs to do better. Don’t set us up for failure,” he wrote. “We are running with jet lag, no proper recovery.”
His comments have sparked widespread concern about the logistical support given to Ghanaian athletes, especially when representing the nation at major international events.
Comparison With Black Stars Sparks Debate
Rasheed also drew comparisons with Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, suggesting a disparity in how different sporting disciplines are treated.
“If it was the Black Stars, flight tickets would be ready a month prior to their game,” he stated, highlighting what many see as unequal prioritization in sports administration.
The remarks have reignited conversations about fairness, funding, and respect for athletes across all sporting categories in Ghana.
Calls for Accountability and Reform
Sports analysts and fans are now calling on authorities to address the issue urgently, emphasizing that proper logistics are essential for peak athletic performance.
Many argue that Ghana’s ambitions on the global stage cannot be achieved if athletes are consistently disadvantaged by poor planning and inadequate support systems.
Why This Story Matters
This controversy exposes deeper structural challenges within Ghana’s sports administration. Ensuring fair treatment, proper planning, and athlete welfare is critical if the country hopes to compete and win at the highest levels.
