Zoomlion Ghana Limited has intensified a regionwide disinfection and disinfestation exercise across the Upper West Region as part of efforts to protect public health following recent heavy rains and flooding.
The intervention, being implemented in partnership with the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), is targeting public toilets, refuse dumps and other sanitation hotspots considered potential public-health risks.
The exercise is designed to help address sanitation challenges created or worsened by heavy rainfall, including accumulated waste, stagnant water and conditions that can support the spread of disease vectors.
Public Toilets, Refuse Dumps and Sanitation Hotspots Targeted
Zoomlion’s technical teams are carrying out disinfection and disinfestation activities at carefully identified sanitation-management areas across the region.
The targeted locations include public toilets, refuse dumps and other public spaces where waste accumulation and poor environmental conditions could create risks for surrounding communities.
The intervention forms part of a broader sanitation response being implemented in several parts of Ghana following recent rainfall and flooding. Upper West Authorities Welcome Intervention
Speaking at the launch in Wa, Upper West Regional Coordinating Director Mr Damma Shaiku Mumuni commended the Government and Zoomlion Ghana Limited for supporting efforts to protect communities from public-health threats associated with the rainy season.
Mr Mumuni stressed the importance of sustaining the intervention beyond the current exercise, particularly as heavy rains continue to create sanitation challenges in communities across the region.
He called for closer collaboration between the MMDAs and Zoomlion Ghana Limited to establish sustainable arrangements for regular disinfection and disinfestation exercises.
According to him, continued cooperation would help municipalities and districts manage pollutants and disease vectors associated with poor sanitation and the aftermath of heavy rainfall.
Zoomlion Calls for Long-Term Sanitation Partnerships
The Upper West Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Maxwel Mba Ayipaala, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working closely with local authorities and communities to respond to emerging sanitation and public-health challenges.
He said the intervention formed part of Zoomlion’s broader commitment to supporting national efforts to safeguard public health and improve environmental sanitation.
Mr Ayipaala also stressed the need to move beyond periodic emergency interventions toward more sustainable sanitation partnerships with the various assemblies.
“The rains will always come, and the aftermath of rains will always be there. So, we would want that further engagement be held with the Assemblies, so that moving into the future, we will know what is the most sustainable approach for us here.”
He further expressed appreciation to the MMDAs, traditional authorities, opinion leaders and other stakeholders for their cooperation and support, while appealing for continued collaboration with Zoomlion in its sanitation and public-health operations.
Wa Municipal Assembly Pledges Support
The Wa Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr Adams Moro, assured Zoomlion Ghana Limited of the Assembly’s full support throughout the exercise.
Although the Upper West Region did not experience the same scale of flooding recorded in some other parts of Ghana, Mr Moro noted that heavy rains continued to cause localised flooding and drainage challenges requiring proactive intervention.
He said collaboration between the Assembly and Zoomlion would be important in ensuring that identified sanitation risks were effectively addressed.
The Wa Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer, Mr Kanyiti Jebuni Abdul-Razak, also disclosed that the Assembly had deployed technical personnel to support Zoomlion’s teams and facilitate implementation of the exercise.
Flood Aftermath Can Create Public-Health Risks
The sanitation intervention comes as health authorities continue to warn about risks that can persist after flooding. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that flooding can increase the transmission of water- and vector-borne diseases, while standing water can create breeding conditions for mosquitoes and contaminated water can increase the risk of water-borne illnesses.
The concern is particularly relevant in communities where waste has accumulated or sanitation infrastructure has been affected by heavy rainfall.
WHO Ghana reported in August 2026 that post-flood conditions in Ghana had created public-health concerns involving unsafe drinking water, disrupted sanitation services, waste accumulation and conditions favourable to mosquito breeding. The organisation noted that such conditions can increase risks associated with cholera, diarrhoeal diseases, malaria and other water- and vector-borne diseases.
In April 2026, WHO also reported that Ghana had identified priority areas for targeted, multisectoral interventions to strengthen cholera prevention and control.
Upper West Faces Broader WASH Challenges
The latest exercise also comes amid broader efforts to improve water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in the Upper West Region.
UNICEF recently highlighted water-access challenges in parts of Wa, noting that many families still depend on public standpipes, boreholes and wells, with water safety remaining an important concern.
UNICEF Ghana also says its hygiene programmes support public awareness during emergencies including floods, fires and disease outbreaks, while working with government and other partners to strengthen sanitation and hygiene systems.

Part of a Growing National Sanitation Response
The Upper West exercise follows similar interventions in other regions as authorities and private-sector sanitation operators respond to environmental-health concerns associated with the rainy season.
GhanaMedia.net also reported on Zoomlion’s eight-day disinfection exercise across 22 assemblies in the Central Region, which targeted schools, markets, health facilities, public toilets, refuse sites and other public spaces affected by flooding.
These interventions highlight the importance of sustained cooperation between local authorities, sanitation companies, health institutions and communities in preventing environmental conditions from developing into public-health emergencies.
From Emergency Response to Sustainable Sanitation
For the Upper West Region, the immediate exercise provides a response to sanitation concerns following heavy rainfall, but officials and Zoomlion are also calling for longer-term arrangements.
The emphasis on sustained partnerships is significant because sanitation risks do not necessarily disappear when floodwaters recede. Waste accumulation, blocked drains, contaminated water and stagnant water can continue creating environmental-health concerns after the immediate rainfall event.
