Speaking after the controversy emerged, Blatter argued that match officials are among the most important representatives of FIFA and should never be prevented from carrying out their duties at the tournament.

“No One Is More Official Than The Referee”

Blatter stated that “no one is more official than the referee, and if a country refuses to allow a referee in, the World Cup should not be held in such a country.” His remarks have reignited discussion over the responsibilities of host nations to guarantee access for all FIFA-appointed officials.

Growing World Cup Controversy

The comments come after reports that Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was denied entry into the United States despite being selected by FIFA for the 2026 World Cup officiating team. The incident has attracted criticism from football figures who believe politics should not interfere with global sporting events.

Why The Debate Matters

FIFA relies on neutral referees to maintain the credibility and fairness of its competitions. Any restrictions affecting appointed officials risk raising wider questions about tournament governance and host nation obligations.
