Ghana is mourning the passing of Sulemana Abdul Samed, popularly known as Awuche, who was widely recognized as the country’s tallest man. He died at the age of 33 in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, while receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
According to reports, Awuche had been transferred from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu for specialized treatment after his health deteriorated. He had been battling severe complications linked to gigantism and acromegaly, including a severely curved spine, heart-related problems, and a serious infection in his left leg.
Medical experts had reportedly recommended the amputation of his infected leg in an effort to save his life. In recent weeks, renowned Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama stepped in to fully sponsor his medical treatment, offering hope that advanced care could improve his condition.
Standing at an extraordinary 7 feet 8 inches (234 cm), Awuche became one of Ghana’s most recognizable personalities. His remarkable height attracted both national and international attention, particularly after a BBC News feature highlighted the challenges health workers faced in accurately measuring his height due to limited equipment.
Awuche was diagnosed with acromegaly, a rare hormonal disorder caused by excessive production of growth hormone, resulting in continued growth well into adulthood. Despite enduring numerous physical challenges, he remained admired by many Ghanaians for his humility, resilience, and positive outlook on life.
News of his passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes across social media, with many remembering him as a gentle, kind-hearted man whose story inspired compassion and support throughout Ghana.
