Residents of Akyem Oda in Ghana’s Eastern Region have apprehended a man accused of posing as a mobile airtime vendor to allegedly steal GH¢3,000 from the electronic wallet of an elderly resident.
According to information circulating online and statements attributed to the suspect, he allegedly used the stolen money to repay an outstanding Qwikloan debt. He reportedly hoped that clearing the debt would enable him to qualify for another loan, which he intended to use to replace the stolen funds.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many Ghanaians expressing concern over the growing sophistication of mobile money fraud and urging users to remain vigilant when conducting transactions.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft to establish the full facts of the case. At this stage, the allegations have not been tested in court, and the suspect remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty through due process.
The case also serves as a reminder for mobile money users to verify transactions carefully, protect their PINs, and report suspicious activity immediately to their service provider and the police.
