Growing Calls for Ghana to Intervene in Iraq Case
Pressure is mounting on the Government of Ghana to urgently intervene in the case of two Ghanaian women who have reportedly been jailed in Iraq, amid increasing concern over their welfare and legal future.
The women, identified in widely circulated reports as Juliet Amponsah and Charity Eme from Asempaneye in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region, are reported to have spent several months in detention in Iraq.
According to information gathered by GhanaMedia.net from multiple sources, there are growing fears that if the women are convicted of offences carrying the most severe penalties under Iraqi law, they could face extremely serious legal consequences. However, the exact charges, court proceedings and any final sentence have not been officially confirmed by Iraqi authorities.
Because of the uncertainty surrounding the case, family members, concerned citizens and members of the Ghanaian public are calling on the Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately engage Iraqi authorities, verify the facts, ensure the women’s welfare and provide every available consular assistance.
