Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded into police custody for one week over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The Dansoman Circuit Court ordered the remand after Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following his arrest by the Accra Regional Police Command.
He is expected to reappear before the court on September 2, 2026, as police continue investigations into the alleged threat.
The case stems from a video circulating on social media in which Ayitey Powers was allegedly seen making threatening remarks against the NSA Director-General.
According to reports, the former boxer reported himself to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters after receiving an invitation to assist with investigations. He was subsequently detained and processed for court.
The development followed a call by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged comments.
The committee described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
The GBIMC has also initiated disciplinary proceedings against Ayitey Powers, creating a separate process that could have implications for his position within Ghana’s boxing community.
The latest development comes amid a long-running disagreement between Ayitey Powers and authorities over issues surrounding boxing activities and a cancelled boxing event.
Ayitey Powers had previously raised concerns over the cancellation of a boxing event promoted by his Ayitey Powers Promotions, claiming that the decision resulted in significant financial losses.
Despite the dispute, the two men had appeared to make peace publicly in May, in a gesture that appeared to ease tensions between them.
The latest allegations have, however, brought the disagreement back into the public spotlight, with police now investigating the circumstances surrounding the video and the alleged threat.
Authorities have urged members of the public to exercise restraint and refrain from circulating unverified information while investigations continue.
For now, Ayitey Powers remains in police custody and has not been convicted of any offence. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 2, 2026, when further developments in the case are expected.
