Armed Attack at Sea: 71 Ghanaian Fishermen Rescued After Raid Near Awutu Senya

At least 71 Ghanaian fishermen have been successfully rescued after a violent armed attack off the coast near Senya Bereku in the Central Region, authorities confirmed amid ongoing security operations. The incident has raised alarm over maritime safety for fishing communities in Ghana’s Gulf of Guinea waters.

Attack Under Cover of Darkness

The fishermen, on a night fishing expedition, were reportedly ambushed by heavily armed gunmen operating from a “black boat” late Wednesday. Survivors told rescuers that the assailants fired warning shots, held them at gunpoint, and made off with vital equipment including outboard motors, generators and other supplies, leaving them stranded several miles offshore.

Victim Allegations and Fear at Sea

One of the rescued victims later alleged that the attackers were Nigerians and that the attackers pointed AK‑47 assault rifles at them and threatened to kill them if they failed to comply, according to eyewitness accounts circulating on social media. While authorities have not publicly verified the attackers’ nationality, survivors’ testimonies underscore the terror of the encounter.

Rescue Mission and Military Response

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), including naval and air units, launched a coordinated search and rescue operation at dawn following the distress call. By Thursday, all 71 fishermen reported missing had been located and brought back to shore, where they were medically checked and discharged after initial treatment. Officials emphasised that no fatalities have been reported in connection with the attack.

Official Statements and Ongoing Investigations

Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi confirmed the rescue and described the operation as a priority to safeguard lives. The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh‑Agbotui, also praised the rapid response of security agencies, noting that patrols and investigations are continuing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

Concerns Over Maritime Security

The assault has renewed concerns about maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, a region with a history of piracy, robbery and attacks on small vessels. Fishing communities have called for enhanced naval patrols and stronger protection measures to safeguard livelihoods and prevent future attacks.
