In a joint press release issued on April 15, 2026, Ghana Gas and the Ghana Grid Company confirmed that the affected system has been severely damaged and will require a full replacement before operations can be fully restored.

Emergency Shutdown Disrupts Power Supply

The failure of the Burner Management System—an essential safety and control mechanism within the Heat Medium System—forced operators to shut down the plant immediately to prevent further damage and ensure operational safety.

This has led to a significant reduction in gas supply to thermal power plants, raising concerns about electricity stability across the country.

Impact on National Grid

The Ghana Grid Company indicated that the disruption has already placed pressure on the national grid, as thermal plants dependent on processed gas are now operating below capacity or temporarily offline.

Energy experts warn that the situation could result in intermittent outages if alternative fuel sources are not deployed quickly.

Full Replacement Required

Authorities have confirmed that the damaged controller cannot be repaired and must be replaced entirely, a process that may take time depending on procurement and installation timelines.

Efforts are currently underway to mitigate the impact while engineers work to restore normal operations.

Why This Story Matters

This incident highlights the vulnerability of Ghana’s energy infrastructure and the risks associated with reliance on single critical systems. It also raises broader concerns about long-term resilience and investment in backup systems to safeguard power stability.
