The Ghana Police Service has officially confirmed that Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, assaulted a police officer during a public protest held in May 2025.
According to a police statement released earlier today, the incident occurred when officers attempted to restore order during a heated confrontation between demonstrators and security personnel. Eyewitnesses claim the altercation escalated quickly, resulting in the legislator allegedly striking one of the officers on duty.
Following internal investigations, the case has been formally referred to the Attorney-General’s Office for legal advice and potential prosecution. The police administration noted that due process will be followed and that the rule of law applies to all citizens, irrespective of their political standing or office held.
So far, the Attorney-General’s Office has not issued any official comment or update on the matter. Calls for transparency and accountability have been mounting on social media, with civil society organizations urging authorities to ensure a fair and swift resolution to the case.
