Accra, July 31, 2026 – The MTN Ghana Foundation’s investment in maternal and child healthcare is delivering remarkable and lasting impact, with the 60-bed Maternity and Child Health Block at the Keta Municipal Hospital significantly improving access to quality healthcare and contributing to better maternal and newborn health outcomes across the Volta Region.

As part of efforts to assess the long-term impact of the project, the MTN Ghana Foundation, together with journalists from Accra and the Volta Region, undertook a media tour of the Keta Municipal Hospital. The visit, held two years after the facility became operational, provided first-hand insight into how the modern healthcare infrastructure has transformed maternal and neonatal healthcare delivery for thousands of women, newborns and families.

The delegation was welcomed by the Hospital Administrator, Mr. Farouk Iddrisu, and members of the hospital’s management team, who conducted an extensive tour of the facility. Participants observed that the maternity block remains in excellent condition and continues to provide a safe, modern, spacious and patient-centred environment for maternal and child healthcare.

During engagements with healthcare professionals, patients and members of the community, there was overwhelming appreciation for the MTN Ghana Foundation’s intervention, which replaced the hospital’s previously overcrowded maternity ward and significantly strengthened its capacity to provide comprehensive maternal and neonatal healthcare services.

Reflecting on the project’s impact, Mr. Iddrisu said the facility has transformed healthcare delivery by expanding access to skilled maternity services, improving patient care and enhancing the hospital’s ability to manage both routine and complex maternal and neonatal cases.

“The MTN Ghana Foundation’s investment has changed the story of maternal healthcare in Keta. Mothers now receive care in a dignified environment with modern equipment, while our healthcare professionals are able to deliver higher quality services than ever before,” he said.

Improving Access to Quality Maternal Healthcare

Since the commissioning of the facility, utilisation of maternal and child health services has continued to rise steadily, reflecting growing public confidence in the hospital’s expanded capacity and quality of care.

Antenatal Care (ANC) attendance increased from 8,641 clients in 2022 to 10,174 clients in 2025, while 4,635 women had already accessed antenatal services during the first half of 2026.

Maternity admissions also recorded significant growth, increasing from 1,966 admissions in 2023 to 2,475 admissions in 2025, representing an increase of approximately 26 percent. During the first six months of 2026 alone, the hospital recorded 1,331 maternity admissions, demonstrating sustained demand for its expanded services.

The facility has equally strengthened neonatal healthcare, with neonatal admissions increasing from 377 in 2024 to 501 in 2025, enabling the hospital to manage a greater number of newborn referrals that would previously have been transferred to other health facilities.

Overall, the hospital now records approximately 25,000 antenatal care visits annually, admits about 3,000 pregnant women each year, and has safely delivered more than 3,000 babies since the maternity block became operational.

Saving Lives Through Better Healthcare

Beyond expanding access to quality healthcare, the project has contributed significantly to improved maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Maternal mortality has declined considerably since the commissioning of the facility. Whereas the hospital previously recorded an average of two maternal deaths annually, it recorded one maternal death in 2023 and no maternal deaths during the first half of 2026.

Similarly, the hospital’s neonatal mortality ratio improved from 6 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2022 to 1.3 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024, even as the facility continues to manage increasingly complex neonatal cases with consistently low mortality rates.

These improvements have been driven by enhanced clinical capacity, the availability of modern medical equipment, expanded inpatient space, strengthened infection prevention and control measures, and improved patient privacy and comfort.

A Lasting Investment in Community Health

The MTN Ghana Foundation’s intervention has further strengthened the Keta Municipal Hospital’s role as the primary referral centre for maternal and newborn healthcare within the municipality and neighbouring districts.

The modern healthcare facility has significantly enhanced the patient experience by providing a spacious, fully equipped environment that enables healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality care while responding effectively to the growing healthcare needs of surrounding communities.

Speaking after the tour, representatives of the MTN Ghana Foundation reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to investing in sustainable initiatives that improve lives and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The Foundation noted that healthcare remains one of its key focus areas, emphasizing that investments in modern healthcare infrastructure continue to create lasting social impact by expanding access to quality healthcare and supporting Ghana’s efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.

The continued increase in service utilisation, coupled with the remarkable improvements in maternal and neonatal health outcomes recorded at the Keta Municipal Hospital, underscores the enduring impact of the MTN Ghana Foundation’s investment and reaffirms its commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare across Ghana.

Organised in partnership with the Forestry Commission, the exercise brought together staff and clients to support Ghana’s reforestation efforts while promoting environmental conservation and climate resilience. Speaking during the exercise, Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Valence said sustainable growth extends beyond financial performance. “At Advans Ghana, we believe that sustainable growth is more than financial success. Every tree we plant today is an investment in a healthier and more resilient Ghana for future generations,” he stated. The initiative also reflects the institution’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship. Working closely with the Forestry Commission over the past seven years, Advans Ghana has maintained an impressive 80 percent survival rate for previously planted trees through continuous monitoring and maintenance.

Alongside its reforestation programme, the institution has significantly reduced its environmental footprint through digital transformation. In 2025 alone, Advans Ghana cut its paper consumption from approximately 1,800 reams to just 445 reams, representing a reduction of more than 75 percent. According to standard paper production estimates, the 1,600 trees planted this year represent the equivalent of more than 26,500 reams of paper, almost 60 times the institution’s annual paper consumption. The tree planting exercise forms part of Advans Ghana’s wider climate roadmap, which focuses on environmental conservation, climate resilience, public awareness, green financing, climate-related loan products and innovative financial solutions for communities affected by climate change.

According to the Gomoa Central District Assembly, operators involved in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, mounted CCTV cameras around their mining site at Gomoa Oguakrom. The cameras were reportedly used to monitor approaching security personnel and district officials, allowing suspects to flee before enforcement teams reached the site.

The operation was led by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Hackman Kobina Aidoo, together with security personnel. During the exercise, officials dismantled the CCTV surveillance equipment and destroyed excavating equipment as well as makeshift structures allegedly being used for illegal mining activities.

The District Assembly said the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, protect water bodies, preserve the environment, and prevent further environmental degradation caused by galamsey activities.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that illegal mining continues to pose a significant threat to Ghana’s forests, rivers, and farmlands. Government agencies and local authorities have therefore intensified enforcement operations across affected communities to dismantle illegal mining networks and discourage offenders.

Residents have also been encouraged to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious mining activities to help safeguard natural resources for future generations.

The scholars arrived at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Thursday to a colourful reception attended by officials of the Jospong Group, family members and well-wishers. The students were sponsored by the Jospong Group through the African Agribusiness Consortium as part of a long-term investment in developing Ghana’s agricultural and environmental sectors.

The scholarship programme focused on Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Waste Management and Sustainable Development, equipping beneficiaries with advanced knowledge and practical skills to support Ghana’s agricultural transformation and environmental sustainability agenda.

Investment in Ghana’s Human Capital

Speaking during the welcome ceremony, Dr. Adelaide Siaw Agyepong explained that the initiative was inspired by the Jospong Group’s expanding investment in agriculture after years of transforming Ghana’s sanitation and waste management sectors.

“By the grace of God, after several years of contributing significantly to Ghana in sanitation and waste management transformation, the Jospong Group made another bold decision a few years ago to support the transformation of Ghana’s agricultural sector,” she stated.

She added that Ghana possesses enormous agricultural potential but requires highly skilled professionals to modernise the sector.

“That is why, in partnership with RUDN University in Russia, we sponsored 118 young students to pursue graduate studies in agriculture, environmental sciences and technology. Their knowledge will benefit not only themselves but also strengthen Ghana’s agriculture sector and national development,” she said.

Dr. Adelaide Siaw Agyepong expressed appreciation to Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, RUDN University, the Embassy of Ghana in the Russian Federation, Ghana’s Ministry of Agriculture and all institutions that supported the students throughout their studies.

She praised the collaboration as a model partnership that demonstrates the importance of investing in education to drive sustainable national development.

Graduates Ready to Serve Ghana

President of the Jospong Scholars RUDN Group, Mr. Saviour Kweku Dotsey, said the graduates are prepared to apply their expertise in climate project management to support Ghana’s environmental and sustainability goals.

“We have built skills in climate project management and we will use our skills to contribute to climate emissions initiatives for both the Jospong Group and the country,” he said.

Another returning scholar, Charlotte Opoku Gyamfua, specialised in carbon reduction within the transport sector and pledged to help reduce emissions while supporting climate data collection and environmental planning.

Supporting Sustainable Development

Upon returning to Ghana, the 118 scholars are expected to contribute to food security, rural development, climate-smart agriculture, environmental protection and modern waste management.

The Jospong Group says the African Agribusiness Consortium scholarship programme remains one of its flagship human capital initiatives aimed at preparing young Ghanaian professionals to support the country’s long-term economic transformation.
