Speaking to journalists after the unveiling, Meizongo reflected on his remarkable entrepreneurial journey—from working as an Uber driver to establishing one of Ghana’s emerging luxury fragrance brands.

“Coming from being an Uber driver to this height, I can only thank God. I’m not exceptional, I’m not lucky; I’m just part of a bigger picture. Alhamdulillah, I thank God.”

The launch event embraced African heritage, with guests encouraged to wear traditional attire, reinforcing Maison Yusif’s commitment to promoting African identity through luxury products.

According to the CEO, the company seeks to redefine luxury by celebrating African traditions instead of copying Western trends.

“I want the entire world to embrace Africa, the African culture, our traditions. Honestly, I’m tired of replicating everything the Western world does. Africa is the next big thing.”

He emphasized that The Beast is proudly handcrafted in Accra, using world-class perfumery techniques while maintaining authentic Ghanaian identity.

When asked how he would introduce the fragrance to someone unfamiliar with the brand, his answer was simple:

“Maison Yusif, proudly made in Ghana—that’s the best pitch I could give.”

Looking ahead, Meizongo said the company’s vision extends far beyond Ghana.

“Maison Yusif is not in competition with anyone. We are in our own race. We are a royal fragrance house, proudly made in Ghana by a Ghanaian. Within the next five to ten years, we want to conquer Africa and the world.”

Explaining the inspiration behind the fragrance’s name, he noted that the creative team intentionally chose “The Beast” because it reflects strength, dominance, and confidence.

Although designed as a unisex fragrance, its scent profile leans toward a masculine character.

Crafted for Presence

Maison Yusif says The Beast was created for individuals who command attention through quiet confidence rather than loud expression.

The extrait de parfum opens with fresh notes of bergamot, cardamom, oregano, and black pepper, followed by a heart of incense, amber, oud, sandalwood, and vetiver. It finishes with rich base notes of oud, leather, patchouli, vanilla, and tonka bean.

The company says the fragrance lasts up to 24 hours on the skin and 72 hours on fabric, reinforcing its position within the premium luxury fragrance market.

“Cheaper credit clears a blockage. It does not, on its own, build a factory or fill it with workers.”

He noted that businesses across Ghana have struggled over the past several years for reasons extending beyond high borrowing costs. In his view, reliable electricity, affordable energy and improved access to finance remain the real drivers of sustainable job creation.

Reliable Power More Important Than Interest Rates

Dr Ankrah explained that a tailor in Kumasi or a food processing business in Tema is unlikely to hire additional workers simply because commercial lending rates have fallen.

Instead, businesses expand when they can rely on stable electricity supplies at affordable prices.

He therefore described government investments in gas-to-power infrastructure as potentially more significant for employment than recent monetary policy adjustments.

Access to Credit Remains a Major Challenge

The economist also highlighted that the issue is not merely the cost of borrowing but whether businesses can actually obtain financing.

For years, many banks have preferred investing in government securities rather than lending to small and medium-sized enterprises due to lower risk.

He further pointed out that nearly 80 percent of Ghana’s workforce operates within the informal sector, meaning many workers and entrepreneurs remain outside the formal banking system and benefit little from lower lending rates.

Growth Must Create Jobs

While acknowledging recent economic growth, Dr Ankrah argued that the nature of that growth matters.

Expansion driven largely by gold and oil production typically generates limited employment because these sectors are highly capital-intensive.

Instead, he believes Ghana should prioritise sectors capable of absorbing large numbers of workers, including:

  • Agro-processing
  • Manufacturing
  • Construction
  • Tourism

According to him, these industries require deliberate government support and industrial policies rather than relying solely on macroeconomic stability.

Public Investment Also Matters

Dr Ankrah warned that fiscal discipline can have unintended consequences.

He observed that capital expenditure execution reportedly contracted significantly, reducing opportunities for businesses that depend on government contracts and public infrastructure projects.

Without strong investment activity, private firms may delay hiring despite improvements in inflation and interest rates.

Lessons from Vietnam and Rwanda

Drawing international comparisons, Dr Ankrah referenced Vietnam and Rwanda as examples of countries that combined macroeconomic stability with clear industrial strategies.

He argued that these nations succeeded by developing export industries, strengthening production capacity and integrating into global value chains rather than depending solely on lower interest rates.

The Real Test Ahead

Dr Ankrah concluded that the success of Ghana’s economic programme will ultimately depend on whether initiatives such as the proposed 24-Hour Economy and ongoing energy investments translate into meaningful employment opportunities.

He maintained that macroeconomic stability provides an important foundation, but lasting prosperity will depend on building productive industries capable of creating jobs at scale.

Ghana’s persistent flooding has once again sparked national debate over plastic pollution, with environmental experts insisting that the country’s greatest challenge is not plastics themselves but how plastic waste is managed after use.

As the world observed International Plastic Bag Free Day, stakeholders across Ghana renewed calls for stronger recycling systems, improved sanitation enforcement and responsible waste disposal instead of an outright ban on plastics.

Plastic remains one of the most widely used materials globally because of its affordability, durability and versatility. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the world now produces more than 430 million tonnes of plastic every year. However, only around nine per cent is recycled, while nearly half ends up in landfills and millions of tonnes pollute rivers, lakes and oceans.

Africa alone generates an estimated 17 million tonnes of plastic waste annually.

In Ghana, estimates from the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and development partners indicate that the country produces between 1.1 and 1.3 million tonnes of plastic waste every year—more than 3,000 tonnes every day. Yet only 10–15 per cent is collected for recycling.

Recent Floods Expose Ghana’s Waste Challenge

The devastating floods experienced in parts of Accra have renewed public calls for action against plastic pollution.

According to James Deku, Corporate Affairs Officer of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, plastics themselves are not the problem.

Instead, he believes indiscriminate disposal of plastic waste into drains, streams and open spaces creates environmental disasters by blocking drainage systems.

“When plastics clog drains, they prevent the free flow of stormwater, causing floods that destroy homes, businesses and sometimes claim lives,” he explained.

Mr. Deku advocates stronger enforcement of sanitation by-laws, continuous public education and practical recycling policies rather than banning plastics entirely.

He also supports reviving traditional biodegradable packaging options, including the use of leaves for selected products, while gradually reducing unnecessary single-use plastics.

Recycling Instead of Prohibition

Production Planner at Universal Plastic Products and Recycling (UPPR) Ghana Limited, Gabriel Kudiabor, believes plastics should be viewed as valuable industrial raw materials instead of waste.

According to him, Ghana’s plastic problem stems largely from poor waste management and public behaviour rather than the material itself.

He recommends:

  • Increased investment in recycling infrastructure.
  • Nationwide public education on waste segregation.
  • Stronger collection systems.
  • A nationwide deposit-return scheme for plastic beverage bottles.

Countries operating deposit-return programmes have significantly improved recycling rates while creating reliable supplies of recyclable materials for industry.

Giving Plastic a Second Life

At UPPR’s recycling facility, thousands of discarded PET bottles are collected, sorted, washed and converted into high-quality PET flakes every day.

These recycled materials are used in producing:

  • Polyester fibre
  • Yarn
  • Textiles
  • Reflective safety clothing
  • Industrial packaging materials

Beyond PET, the company is also expanding recycling operations to include Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE) plastics commonly used in detergent bottles, buckets, food containers, crates and household packaging.

“What many people consider rubbish is increasingly becoming an important industrial raw material,” Mr. Kudiabor said.

Building Ghana’s Circular Economy

Experts argue that recycling plastics instead of discarding them can simultaneously:

  • Reduce environmental pollution.
  • Prevent drainage blockages.
  • Minimise urban flooding.
  • Create thousands of green jobs.
  • Strengthen local manufacturing.
  • Reduce dependence on imported raw materials.
  • Increase export opportunities.

Representatives from the Ghana National Action on Plastics (GNPAPS) agree that government alone cannot solve the country’s plastic waste challenge.

Success, they say, requires collaboration between government, private companies, manufacturers and every Ghanaian household.

Until affordable and durable alternatives become widely available, plastics will remain part of everyday life. The long-term solution lies not in eliminating plastics altogether but in ensuring every plastic item is collected, recycled and transformed into new products instead of ending up in drains and waterways.
