Major Industrial Investment in Tema

The new calcined clay cement plant is located in the Tema Industrial Area and forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to strengthen domestic manufacturing while reducing reliance on imported clinker used in traditional cement production. The facility has the capacity to produce approximately 1.5 million tonnes of cement annually, including nearly 400,000 tonnes of calcined clay.

Government officials say the investment will significantly boost Ghana’s construction sector while supporting infrastructure development and housing projects across the country.

Innovative LC3 Cement Technology

The plant uses Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) technology, an innovative method that replaces a large portion of traditional clinker with locally sourced calcined clay and limestone. According to research from EPFL and other global institutions, LC3 cement can reduce carbon emissions by up to 40% compared to conventional cement production.

Traditional cement manufacturing contributes roughly 7–8% of global carbon dioxide emissions. By adopting LC3 technology, Ghana is taking an important step toward greener construction and climate-friendly industrial processes.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The project has already created more than 100 direct jobs for engineers, technicians, and plant operators, with over 1,000 additional jobs generated across supply chains such as clay mining, logistics, transportation, and construction services.

Industry analysts believe the facility will help stabilise cement supply in Ghana while reducing the country’s dependence on imported clinker, which often places pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

Boost for Ghana’s Construction and Infrastructure Sector

With Ghana’s rapid urbanisation and growing demand for housing and infrastructure, cement consumption continues to rise across the country. The new plant is expected to support major projects including roads, bridges, residential housing, and public infrastructure.

The investment also aligns with Ghana’s ambition to become a manufacturing hub in West Africa and take advantage of opportunities created by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Positioning Ghana as a Leader in Sustainable Cement Production

The commissioning of the world’s largest clay-based cement facility highlights Ghana’s growing role in sustainable industrial innovation. By combining advanced technology with locally available resources, the project demonstrates how African economies can pursue economic growth while reducing environmental impact.

As the construction sector expands across West Africa, the new facility is expected to strengthen Ghana’s position as a regional hub for sustainable building materials and industrial development.

Renewable energy expansion expected to power Ghana’s proposed 24-hour economy and industrial growth.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to ensure stable electricity supply while transitioning toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

Major Boost for Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy Vision

The renewable energy expansion is designed to support Ghana’s emerging 24-hour economy policy, which aims to keep businesses, factories, and public services operating continuously to drive productivity and economic growth.

By adding 2,000MW of renewable power to the national grid, Ghana hopes to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while providing the stable electricity supply needed for manufacturing, logistics, and digital services to operate throughout the day and night.

The plan includes large-scale investments in solar, wind, and other renewable energy technologies, positioning Ghana as one of the leading renewable energy hubs in West Africa.

Reducing Power Instability and Supporting Industry

Energy experts say the expansion could significantly reduce the risk of power shortages that have historically disrupted businesses in Ghana.

A stronger renewable energy base would help stabilize electricity supply for key sectors including mining, agro-processing, manufacturing, and technology services.

Reliable electricity is considered a critical requirement for any successful 24-hour economic model, where factories and service providers operate in multiple shifts to maximize productivity.

International Partnerships and Investment

The 2,000MW renewable energy plan is expected to attract major international investment and strengthen partnerships between Ghana and global clean-energy developers.

According to energy sector analysts, the initiative could unlock billions of dollars in green infrastructure funding while supporting Ghana’s commitment to global climate goals.

Institutions such as the World Bank and the International Energy Agency have repeatedly highlighted the importance of renewable energy expansion in emerging economies.

Positioning Ghana as a Regional Energy Leader

If successfully implemented, the renewable energy plan could position Ghana as a regional leader in sustainable electricity generation.

Beyond supporting domestic industry, the additional capacity may also strengthen Ghana’s role within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) power market, enabling electricity exports to neighboring countries.

The move is also expected to help Ghana meet its long-term climate commitments while accelerating economic development.

Energy Security for Long-Term Economic Growth

Energy security remains one of the most important pillars of Ghana’s economic future. With rising demand from urban growth, digital infrastructure, and industrial expansion, renewable energy is increasingly seen as a sustainable solution.

As Ghana pushes forward with its 24-hour economy vision, the 2,000MW renewable energy plan could become one of the most significant infrastructure initiatives shaping the country’s development in the coming decade.

Notorious Land Guard Suspect Arrested in Intelligence Operation

According to police sources, Saviour Kojo Ekpe, described as a suspected notorious land guard, was arrested on March 5, 2026, after authorities received intelligence reports that he had allegedly been terrorising residents in Abokobi and surrounding communities.

Investigators believe Ekpe had been intimidating residents and was allegedly involved in renting out firearms to criminals for unlawful activities. The arrest forms part of wider efforts by security agencies to clamp down on illegal weapons and land guard operations across the country.

Police Retrieve Pump-Action Guns, Pistol and Over 100 Cartridges

A search conducted in Ekpe’s room led to the retrieval of several firearms and ammunition. Items recovered by the police included four pump-action guns, 101 AA and BB live cartridges, a Glock Austria pistol, 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a jack knife.

During interrogation, Ekpe admitted ownership of the weapons but failed to provide lawful justification for possessing them. He reportedly claimed some of the weapons were used for hunting and personal protection.

However, investigators suspect the firearms may have been supplied to criminals for illegal operations, raising concerns about the circulation of illegal weapons in the Greater Accra Region.

Second Suspect Arrested for Alleged Threats

Police also arrested Emmanuel Abbey, who is believed to be an accomplice of Ekpe. Abbey was picked up after allegedly threatening the life of a complainant connected to the case.

The police say both suspects remain in custody while investigations continue.

Police Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Arms and Land Guards

The arrests highlight ongoing efforts by Ghanaian security authorities to combat the activities of land guards and the proliferation of illegal firearms, which have been linked to land disputes and violent confrontations in several parts of the country.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that individuals found in possession of illegal weapons or involved in land guard operations will face the full rigours of the law.

Residents are also being encouraged to report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies to help maintain peace and security in their communities.

Recent security developments and crime-related reports across the country continue to draw national attention, including incidents such as the Wisconsin teen accused of killing his parents in an alleged assassination plot and growing discussions about security threats facing Ghanaian peacekeepers abroad.

Authorities say the investigation into the Abokobi case remains ongoing and further arrests could follow as police work to dismantle networks linked to illegal arms circulation.
