Remembering a Ghanaian legend on his birth date

Accra, Ghana — Today, January 10, football fans in Ghana and around the world are remembering and celebrating the life of the late Christian Atsu, the beloved Black Stars winger who was born on this day in 1992. 

Although Atsu tragically lost his life in the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake at the age of 31, his legacy continues to inspire many across Ghana and beyond. 

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) marked what would have been his birthday with heartfelt tributes on social media, praising his contributions on and off the pitch. In its message, the Association urged fans to “remember and celebrate the incredible person and player you were, Christian Atsu,” adding that his legacy with the Black Stars lives on. 

Clubs that Atsu played for during his career—including Chelsea and Newcastle United—also joined in honouring his memory, sharing messages that highlighted his determination, passion and the impact he made during his time in football. 

Atsu rose from humble beginnings in Ada Foah to shine on some of Europe’s biggest stages and became a cherished figure for Ghanaian football fans. As supporters celebrate his birth date today, many are sharing memories of his electrifying performances and dedication to giving back to his community.
