A 26-year-old Liberian national has died after being attacked by a mob in the Lashibi–Sakumono area of Accra, prompting arrests, a police investigation and diplomatic engagement from the Liberian government.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, 27 February 2026, has renewed concerns over mob justice in Ghana and the safety of foreign nationals residing in the country.
Attack in Lashibi
The victim, identified as Austin Tengeeh, was reportedly confronted by residents who suspected him of theft. According to preliminary police findings, he was chased and beaten by a group before officers arrived at the scene.
He was found unconscious and later pronounced dead at a nearby health facility. Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Three Suspects Arrested
The Sakumono District Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged lynching. Authorities say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend additional individuals believed to have participated in the attack.
Police have reiterated warnings against mob justice, emphasising that assault and vigilantism are criminal offences under Ghanaian law. They have urged members of the public to report suspected crimes to authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands.
Liberian Embassy Engages Authorities
The Embassy of Liberia in Accra has formally engaged Ghanaian authorities following the incident. Officials say they are closely monitoring developments and have reached out to the deceased’s family.
In a statement, the embassy extended condolences and called for calm within the Liberian community in Ghana while the legal process unfolds.
Growing Concerns Over Vigilantism
The case has sparked public debate about recurring incidents of mob violence. Civil society organisations have called for stronger public education on the rule of law and swift prosecution of offenders to deter similar acts.
