In a heartfelt message to supporters, the promising athlete said she never intended to abandon athletics entirely. Instead, she explained that nursing would only become an option if she could not afford to pursue a professional athletics career.

“I never said I would stop athletics after completing SHS directly,” she said. “What I meant was if I’m not able to afford to become a professional athlete, I will opt to become a nurse.”

Financial Struggles Behind the Concern

Afoakwa revealed that her earlier comments were influenced by the financial difficulties her family is currently facing. According to her, the uncertainty about whether she could continue competing at higher levels caused anxiety during the interview.

“Yes, I was confused at the interview and worried I may not be able to compete as my father has financial issues,” she explained.

The young athlete also shared that even basic sporting equipment has been a challenge, revealing that the running shoes she wore during one of her races were not the correct size.

“Even during the race, my runner wear was too big for my foot,” she added.

A Promise Not to Give Up

Despite the challenges, Afoakwa emphasized that she remains determined to continue her athletics journey and represent Ghana on bigger stages.

She appealed to Ghanaians for encouragement and support as she pursues her dreams.

“I have financial difficulties and I’m concerned, but I don’t want to give up. I count on you all lovely people of Ghana to continue to support me, encourage me and help me in any way possible,” she said.

The athlete also pledged her commitment to making the country proud through her talent.

“I want to make my country proud. I promise to hold up the name of Ghana high wherever I go.”
