A tragic explosion on the Nsawam-Accra highway has claimed several lives after residents allegedly attempted to siphon fuel from a broken-down tanker at Ntoaso.
Fuel Siphoning Attempt Sparks Deadly Inferno
Eyewitnesses say some individuals used chisels and other metal tools to pierce the tanker in an attempt to collect fuel. The action caused petrol to spill onto the road, creating a highly explosive atmosphere that quickly turned catastrophic.

Moments later, flames engulfed the area, trapping several people, motorcycles, and vehicles that had drawn closer to collect the leaking fuel.
Casualties and Injuries Confirmed
Reports indicate that two occupants of a taxi were burnt to death in the fire. Several others sustained severe burn injuries and have been rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
A woman carrying a baby was also badly burnt in the incident. Fortunately, the baby was rescued from the flames.
The tanker driver suffered serious burns and is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.
VIP Bus Damaged, Passengers Safe
A VIP passenger bus was among the vehicles affected by the blaze. However, the driver acted swiftly and successfully evacuated all passengers before the fire spread fully. Although the bus was badly damaged, no passenger on board lost their life.

Emergency Response Underway
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the National Disaster Management Organisation are currently at the scene. Authorities are managing the situation, controlling crowds, and clearing debris to restore order.
Heavy Traffic on Nsawam–Suhum Stretch
Traffic remains heavy along the Nsawam to Suhum stretch of the highway. Police officers are redirecting vehicles through the Nsawam Old Road as emergency operations continue.
