Daniel Jeddman: Ghana’s Flood Crisis Is a Sanitation Problem, Not a Political One

Daniel Jeddman: Ghana’s Flood Crisis Demands a National Sanitation Revolution

Publisher and media executive Daniel Jeddman has called on Ghanaians to take sanitation more seriously, arguing that recurring floods across the country are largely the result of poor waste disposal practices, blocked drainage systems, and weak enforcement of environmental laws rather than political failures. Speaking after the latest flooding incidents, he stressed that Ghana, like every tropical nation, should expect heavy rainfall during certain months of the year and therefore must prepare adequately.

According to Jeddman, sanitation is one of the defining characteristics of developed nations. He noted that countries such as Germany maintain strict environmental standards through effective drainage systems, readily available public waste bins, and firm penalties against littering. He argued that similar discipline and consistent enforcement are needed in Ghana if the country is to reduce the devastating effects of annual floods.

“This is not something government alone should force people to do,” he said. “Citizens must also accept responsibility for how they treat their environment. We cannot continue throwing plastic waste, sachet water wrappers, fruit peels and other refuse into gutters and later blame nature when floods occur.”

Jeddman explained that rainfall is naturally expected to flow through properly maintained drainage systems into rivers and eventually the sea. However, when drains become blocked with refuse, water overflows onto roads and communities, leading to widespread flooding, destruction of property and avoidable loss of lives.

He also called for stronger enforcement of sanitation regulations, including stricter penalties for indiscriminate dumping of waste. Beyond enforcement, he proposed greater investment in environmental sanitation teams and youth employment programmes dedicated to keeping streets, gutters and public spaces clean throughout the year.

Rejecting attempts to politicise the flooding debate, Jeddman maintained that environmental responsibility belongs to every Ghanaian regardless of political affiliation. “This is not about politics. This is about how we treat our environment. The environment eventually reflects back the way we treat it,” he said.

“As the well-known saying goes, ‘Cleanliness is next to godliness.'”

While this popular saying is often associated with biblical values, it is not an actual Bible verse. A related biblical teaching is found in 2 Corinthians 7:1: “Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”

Jeddman further encouraged citizens to embrace cleanliness not only for public health but also as a reflection of personal responsibility, community pride and moral discipline, insisting that a cleaner Ghana would significantly reduce the impact of seasonal flooding while improving the nation’s image and quality of life.

Ajagurajah: Accra Flooding Is a Spiritual Problem, Not an Engineering Failure

Bishop Kwabena Asiamah, widely known as Ajagurajah, has stirred fresh public debate after claiming that the recent devastating floods in Accra are not the result of engineering or architectural failures but rather a spiritual issue. Speaking on the disaster, he argued that Ghanaians should focus on appeasing the gods, insisting that such spiritual intervention would help resolve the recurring flooding problem.

The comments come in the wake of severe flooding that affected several communities across Accra, leaving homes, businesses and major roads submerged while emergency responders carried out rescue operations. Ajagurajah’s remarks have generated mixed reactions online, with some supporting his spiritual perspective while others argue that improving drainage systems, enforcing planning regulations and investing in infrastructure remain the practical solutions to the city’s flood challenges.

Although the exact location of the widely shared video has not been independently verified, it has become a powerful symbol of the sacrifices parents make to protect their children during emergencies. Many social media users have praised the father’s courage while calling for stronger drainage infrastructure and long-term flood mitigation measures.

Flooding remains one of Ghana’s recurring environmental challenges during periods of heavy rainfall. Urban expansion, blocked drainage systems and construction in waterways continue to increase the risk of severe flooding in many communities.

Authorities continue to advise residents living in flood-prone areas to remain alert, follow official weather updates and relocate to safer locations whenever necessary.

The remarks have generated mixed reactions online, with supporters praising his call for accountability and critics questioning both the comparison with Dubai and the emphasis on a candidate’s age.

At the time of publication, the comments remain part of an ongoing political discussion on social media and do not represent an official policy position by Ghana’s Electoral Commission or any political party. The statements reflect A Plus’ personal political opinion and continue to fuel debate ahead of future elections.

“I Have Run Out of Funds”: Ghana’s Viral ‘Powder Guy’ Appeals to GFA, Government and Well-Wishers for World Cup Support

Kailani, whose energetic powder-blowing celebrations have gone viral across international television broadcasts and social media, said he financed his own visas, flights and travel from Accra to Toronto, Boston and Philadelphia out of his own pocket because of his passion for Ghana football. However, he says he has now run out of resources and is appealing to the Government of Ghana, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), corporate Ghana and well-wishers to help him continue supporting the Black Stars.

According to his public appeal, he is not requesting cash donations but rather assistance with match tickets, hotel accommodation and transportation so he can continue following Ghana in the tournament. Kailani described the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the most expensive tournament he has attended, despite having supported Ghana at previous editions.

His appeal has sparked mixed reactions online. While many Ghanaians have praised his unwavering patriotism and commitment, others believe public institutions should prioritise official responsibilities before assisting individual supporters. Nevertheless, many football fans acknowledge that Kailani has become one of the global faces of Ghanaian fan culture during this World Cup.

With Ghana preparing for a crucial knockout-stage clash against Colombia, supporters hope the passionate fan will once again be present in the stands, continuing the unique celebrations that have captured worldwide attention. Governance Quality Is a Macroeconomic Variable: Prof. Kpessa-Whyte Makes the Economic Case for Institutional Reform at EPL Ghana Fellowship

Governance is often discussed as a political ideal or an administrative obligation. But on Tuesday, Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), presented it as something much more consequential: a macroeconomic variable capable of shaping Ghana’s economic future.

Governance Quality Is a Macroeconomic Variable: Prof. Kpessa-Whyte Makes the Economic Case for Institutional Reform at EPL Ghana Fellowship 14

Speaking during the inauguration of the seventh cohort of the Emerging Public Leaders (EPL) Ghana Fellowship, Prof. Kpessa-Whyte argued that transparent, accountable and responsive public institutions are fundamental drivers of economic growth, investor confidence, public trust and national development.

👉🏽 Join 15,000+ readers online now. Join our WhatsApp Daily News Channel for breaking updates.

Unlike many ceremonial keynote speeches centred on ethics alone, his address connected governance directly to Ghana’s ongoing fiscal recovery, institutional credibility and economic resilience.

“A transparent and responsive public sector reduces the cost of doing business. It attracts investment. It builds the tax morale that funds schools, clinics and roads that determine whether the next generation gets a fair start,” he told participants.

The remarks arrive at a significant moment for Ghana as the country continues implementing economic reforms under the International Monetary Fund’s Extended Credit Facility programme while rebuilding investor confidence following debt restructuring efforts.

According to Prof. Kpessa-Whyte, governance should no longer be viewed simply as compliance with regulations but as an economic asset whose quality determines productivity, business confidence and voluntary tax compliance.

He observed that when citizens perceive public institutions as fair and transparent, they become more willing to comply with tax obligations, participate in the formal economy and contribute to national development.

“When citizens experience government as fair, they comply. They participate. They build. They stay,” he noted.

The Director-General further explained that bureaucratic inefficiencies disproportionately affect small businesses and entrepreneurs who lack the financial resources or influence to navigate complicated administrative systems.

He emphasised that governance failures increase transaction costs, discourage investment and slow business growth, ultimately reducing national productivity.

Prof. Kpessa-Whyte stressed that responsive institutions must serve every Ghanaian equally—from market women and farmers to professionals and corporate executives—because inclusive public service delivery creates the institutional foundation necessary for sustainable economic development.

Perhaps the most striking message from the keynote was his assertion that governance quality is built daily through the individual decisions made by public officers rather than through legislation alone.

“The accumulation of your choices is governance,” he told the newly inducted fellows.

That statement reflects a growing body of international governance research showing that institutional quality emerges from consistent administrative behaviour, accountability and ethical leadership across every level of government.

His address therefore positioned leadership development programmes such as the Emerging Public Leaders Fellowship as long-term investments not only in public administration but also in Ghana’s economic competitiveness.

With Ghana continuing efforts to strengthen public institutions, improve state-owned enterprise governance and enhance domestic revenue mobilisation, the policy significance of Prof. Kpessa-Whyte’s remarks extends well beyond the fellowship ceremony.

The speech reinforces an increasingly accepted principle among development economists: countries build stronger economies when they build stronger institutions.

Mahama Unveils Bold 20-Year Plan for New City to Ease Pressure on Flood-Prone Accra

President John Dramani Mahama has announced an ambitious long-term plan to build a new city outside Accra and relocate selected major state institutions there as part of efforts to reduce congestion in Ghana’s capital. Speaking after recent devastating floods that claimed lives and destroyed homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, the President said Ghana must move beyond short-term flood responses and embrace strategic urban planning.

Mahama Unveils Bold 20-Year Plan for New City to Ease Pressure on Flood-Prone Accra 19

The proposal comes after severe flooding exposed Accra’s growing vulnerability due to rapid urbanisation, poor drainage systems, and overcrowding. Mahama stressed that while government will continue investing in improved drainage infrastructure, a more sustainable solution is to decongest the capital by creating a fully planned city capable of supporting government offices, businesses, and residential communities.

According to the President, the proposed city would take approximately 20 years to develop and would feature modern roads, reliable electricity, clean water supply, housing, commercial centres, and government institutions designed to encourage citizens and public agencies to relocate. The initiative forms part of a broader national development strategy aimed at creating resilient cities while reducing pressure on Accra’s overstretched infrastructure.

Urban planning experts have long argued that decentralising government functions could ease traffic congestion, improve service delivery, and lower disaster risks in the capital. If implemented successfully, the project could become one of Ghana’s most significant infrastructure developments in decades.

The announcement has already generated widespread public debate, with many Ghanaians welcoming the vision while raising questions about financing, implementation timelines, and ensuring that existing challenges in Accra are addressed alongside the long-term project.
