Zoomlion Intensifies Disinfection Exercise Across Upper West Region After Heavy Rains and Flooding

0

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has intensified a regionwide disinfection and disinfestation exercise across the Upper West Region as part of efforts to protect public health following recent heavy rains and flooding.

The intervention, being implemented in partnership with the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), is targeting public toilets, refuse dumps and other sanitation hotspots considered potential public-health risks.

The exercise is designed to help address sanitation challenges created or worsened by heavy rainfall, including accumulated waste, stagnant water and conditions that can support the spread of disease vectors.

Public Toilets, Refuse Dumps and Sanitation Hotspots Targeted

Zoomlion’s technical teams are carrying out disinfection and disinfestation activities at carefully identified sanitation-management areas across the region.

The targeted locations include public toilets, refuse dumps and other public spaces where waste accumulation and poor environmental conditions could create risks for surrounding communities.

The intervention forms part of a broader sanitation response being implemented in several parts of Ghana following recent rainfall and flooding. GhanaMedia.net previously reported on Zoomlion’s disinfection and disinfestation exercise in the Oti Region, where flood-prone communities, public toilets, drains, refuse sites and other areas were targeted.

Upper West Authorities Welcome Intervention

Speaking at the launch in Wa, Upper West Regional Coordinating Director Mr Damma Shaiku Mumuni commended the Government and Zoomlion Ghana Limited for supporting efforts to protect communities from public-health threats associated with the rainy season.

Mr Mumuni stressed the importance of sustaining the intervention beyond the current exercise, particularly as heavy rains continue to create sanitation challenges in communities across the region.

He called for closer collaboration between the MMDAs and Zoomlion Ghana Limited to establish sustainable arrangements for regular disinfection and disinfestation exercises.

According to him, continued cooperation would help municipalities and districts manage pollutants and disease vectors associated with poor sanitation and the aftermath of heavy rainfall.

Zoomlion Calls for Long-Term Sanitation Partnerships

The Upper West Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Maxwel Mba Ayipaala, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working closely with local authorities and communities to respond to emerging sanitation and public-health challenges.

He said the intervention formed part of Zoomlion’s broader commitment to supporting national efforts to safeguard public health and improve environmental sanitation.

Mr Ayipaala also stressed the need to move beyond periodic emergency interventions toward more sustainable sanitation partnerships with the various assemblies.

“The rains will always come, and the aftermath of rains will always be there. So, we would want that further engagement be held with the Assemblies, so that moving into the future, we will know what is the most sustainable approach for us here.”

He further expressed appreciation to the MMDAs, traditional authorities, opinion leaders and other stakeholders for their cooperation and support, while appealing for continued collaboration with Zoomlion in its sanitation and public-health operations.

Wa Municipal Assembly Pledges Support

The Wa Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr Adams Moro, assured Zoomlion Ghana Limited of the Assembly’s full support throughout the exercise.

Although the Upper West Region did not experience the same scale of flooding recorded in some other parts of Ghana, Mr Moro noted that heavy rains continued to cause localised flooding and drainage challenges requiring proactive intervention.

He said collaboration between the Assembly and Zoomlion would be important in ensuring that identified sanitation risks were effectively addressed.

The Wa Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer, Mr Kanyiti Jebuni Abdul-Razak, also disclosed that the Assembly had deployed technical personnel to support Zoomlion’s teams and facilitate implementation of the exercise.

Flood Aftermath Can Create Public-Health Risks

The sanitation intervention comes as health authorities continue to warn about risks that can persist after flooding. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that flooding can increase the transmission of water- and vector-borne diseases, while standing water can create breeding conditions for mosquitoes and contaminated water can increase the risk of water-borne illnesses.

The concern is particularly relevant in communities where waste has accumulated or sanitation infrastructure has been affected by heavy rainfall.

WHO Ghana reported in August 2026 that post-flood conditions in Ghana had created public-health concerns involving unsafe drinking water, disrupted sanitation services, waste accumulation and conditions favourable to mosquito breeding. The organisation noted that such conditions can increase risks associated with cholera, diarrhoeal diseases, malaria and other water- and vector-borne diseases.

In April 2026, WHO also reported that Ghana had identified priority areas for targeted, multisectoral interventions to strengthen cholera prevention and control.

Upper West Faces Broader WASH Challenges

The latest exercise also comes amid broader efforts to improve water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in the Upper West Region.

UNICEF recently highlighted water-access challenges in parts of Wa, noting that many families still depend on public standpipes, boreholes and wells, with water safety remaining an important concern.

UNICEF Ghana also says its hygiene programmes support public awareness during emergencies including floods, fires and disease outbreaks, while working with government and other partners to strengthen sanitation and hygiene systems.

GhanaMedia.net previously reported on Zoomlion’s disinfection exercise across all 15 municipalities and districts in the Upper East Region, another intervention targeting public spaces and sanitation facilities during the rainy season.

Part of a Growing National Sanitation Response

The Upper West exercise follows similar interventions in other regions as authorities and private-sector sanitation operators respond to environmental-health concerns associated with the rainy season.

GhanaMedia.net also reported on Zoomlion’s eight-day disinfection exercise across 22 assemblies in the Central Region, which targeted schools, markets, health facilities, public toilets, refuse sites and other public spaces affected by flooding.

These interventions highlight the importance of sustained cooperation between local authorities, sanitation companies, health institutions and communities in preventing environmental conditions from developing into public-health emergencies.

From Emergency Response to Sustainable Sanitation

For the Upper West Region, the immediate exercise provides a response to sanitation concerns following heavy rainfall, but officials and Zoomlion are also calling for longer-term arrangements.

The emphasis on sustained partnerships is significant because sanitation risks do not necessarily disappear when floodwaters recede. Waste accumulation, blocked drains, contaminated water and stagnant water can continue creating environmental-health concerns after the immediate rainfall event.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited says it remains committed to supporting Ghana’s public-health and environmental-sanitation agenda through strategic partnerships, technical expertise and community-focused interventions.

The Upper West exercise therefore represents both an immediate response to post-rain sanitation challenges and an opportunity to strengthen long-term cooperation aimed at building cleaner, safer and healthier communities.

Mother Arrested Allegedly Smuggling Suspected ‘Colos’ to Son on Death Row in Ogun Prison

0

A woman identified as Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi has been arrested after allegedly attempting to take a suspected psychoactive substance into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State, for her son, who is reportedly on death row.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 28, 2026, during routine screening at the entrance of the correctional facility, according to information attributed to the Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

MOTHER ARRESTED SMUGGLING DRUGS TO SON IN PRISON

Suspected Drug Allegedly Hidden Inside Beverage Sachet

Correctional officers reportedly discovered a suspicious substance concealed inside a sachet of powdered beverage during the screening process.

The substance was suspected to be “Colos,” a psychoactive synthetic drug, according to the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Authorities said the package was allegedly intended for an inmate identified as Dare Sowunmi, who is reportedly being held on death row at the facility.

The development has drawn attention because of the alleged method used to conceal the suspected contraband and the fact that the intended recipient was reportedly already serving a death sentence.

GhanaMedia.net has previously reported on a major anti-drug operation in Tamale, where six suspects were arrested as police intensified efforts to tackle suspected illegal drug activities.

Mother Handed Over for Further Investigation

Following the discovery, Sowunmi was detained by correctional officers and subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Nigerian Correctional Service said the arrest followed established screening procedures designed to prevent prohibited substances and other forms of contraband from entering custodial facilities.

The incident underscores the security challenges faced by correctional authorities in preventing inmates from gaining access to prohibited substances through visitors and other channels.

Officials Warn Against Prison Contraband

The Ogun State Controller of Corrections, Abioye Adesina, reportedly commended the officers involved in detecting the suspected substance during the screening exercise.

Authorities reiterated that custodial facilities maintain a zero-tolerance position toward drug trafficking, the introduction of contraband and other activities capable of compromising prison security.

The case is now expected to be investigated further by the relevant law-enforcement authorities, including the NDLEA.

The development comes amid broader concerns over attempts to move illicit substances into correctional facilities, an issue that continues to challenge prison authorities in Nigeria and other countries.

GhanaMedia.net recently reported on a British-Ghanaian man convicted in a major cannabis-smuggling operation involving an estimated £13.8 million worth of cannabis, highlighting the international dimensions of organised drug trafficking.

What Happens Next?

The arrest does not by itself establish criminal guilt. Investigators will have to determine the nature of the substance, where it came from, whether it was intended for the inmate and whether other people were involved.

The woman is expected to face the appropriate legal process if investigators establish sufficient evidence to support criminal charges.

The case also raises questions about how prohibited substances can be detected and intercepted before reaching inmates, particularly in facilities housing prisoners facing serious criminal sentences.

GhanaMedia.net will continue to follow developments as investigators determine the substance involved, the circumstances surrounding the alleged smuggling attempt and any subsequent legal action.

Dutch Drug Underworld Erupts in Overasselt as Masked Gunmen Demand Return of 1,283kg Cocaine

0

Overasselt, Netherlands — September 5, 2026: A violent confrontation in the Dutch village of Overasselt has exposed an alleged dispute over a massive cocaine shipment, after a chilling video surfaced showing masked, armed men demanding that a 28-year-old man return 1,283 kilograms of cocaine.

img 5196
Dutch Drug Underworld Erupts in Overasselt as Masked Gunmen Demand Return of 1,283kg Cocaine 7

The incident has left a security guard dead, two police officers seriously injured and dozens of suspects in custody.

The video, which circulated online after the September 1 attack, shows four masked men, several carrying firearms. One man, speaking English with what Dutch media described as a Spanish accent, accuses the 28-year-old resident, identified in reports as Jan G. Jr., of stealing the cocaine shipment.

According to the message in the video, he was given 12 hours to return the drugs, with threats made against people close to him if he failed to comply. Dutch police have been investigating the authenticity and significance of the recording.

Deadly Attack on Overasselt Property

The threats came shortly after a major armed attack at the Ewijkseweg property in Overasselt.

Dutch police said the incident began at approximately 4:00 a.m. on September 1, when officers responded to reports of a suspicious situation involving a large group of people.

When the first police unit arrived, shots were fired.

A 51-year-old security guard from Wijchen was fatally wounded and died at the scene. Two police officers were also shot and seriously injured, although authorities said they were later out of danger.

The scale of the response was significant. Police deployed specialist units and conducted searches around Overasselt and surrounding areas.

The Dutch police subsequently reported that weapons had been recovered and that investigators were examining whether they were connected to the violence.

34 Suspects Arrested

Authorities initially reported a large number of arrests as the investigation unfolded.

The Dutch Public Prosecution Service later said that 34 people had been arrested in connection with the Overasselt shooting. On September 4, 32 suspects were brought before a judge-commissioner, while two were released.

The suspects included nationals of France, the Netherlands, Algeria, Libya, Ukraine and Belgium.

The prosecution said the suspects faced allegations including murder or manslaughter in connection with the death, attempted murder of two police officers, preparation for serious violent offences and illegal possession of firearms.

The authorities stressed that investigators were still determining the individual roles of the suspects.

What Does the 1,283kg Cocaine Claim Mean?

The alleged cocaine shipment is at the centre of the most sensational part of the case.

In the video, the masked speaker claims that Jan G. Jr. took 1,283 kilograms of cocaine belonging to a Belgian contact in Spain.

However, the crucial distinction is that the cocaine theft remains an allegation contained in the threatening video. Dutch authorities have not publicly established that the 1,283kg shipment was actually stolen by Jan G.

NOS reported that the video contains details that had not previously been made public and did not appear to be AI-generated based on its initial assessment, but the broadcaster and police said the authenticity and reliability of the recording were still being examined.

That distinction is important because the investigation into the alleged drug dispute is continuing.

Possible Link to Fugitive Drug Trafficker

Dutch media have reported possible links between the alleged cocaine dispute and the criminal network associated with Jos Leijdekkers, widely known as “Bolle Jos.”

According to reports, Jan G. Jr. had allegedly conducted business with people connected to Leijdekkers.

Leijdekkers’ lawyers, however, have denied that their client was involved in the Overasselt violence, according to reporting cited by NL Times.

The alleged connection therefore remains part of the wider investigation rather than an established finding against Leijdekkers.

A Property Already Known to Dutch Authorities

The Overasselt property has reportedly been the scene of previous criminal incidents.

Dutch police confirmed that the house had been shot at the previous year and said that history was being considered as part of the current investigation.

Reporting by RTL Nieuws has also detailed previous criminal proceedings involving Jan G. Jr., including a conviction connected to an MDMA laboratory and a separate ongoing money-laundering case involving members of the family.

GhanaMedia.net has previously reported on the international dimensions of drug trafficking, including the conviction of a British-Ghanaian man in a major cannabis-smuggling case involving hundreds of kilograms of drugs transported through Europe. That case illustrates how international criminal networks can span several countries and transport routes.

Police Continue Investigation

The investigation has not ended with the arrests.

Dutch police said investigators were still examining the background and motive behind the attack, while the national investigative authorities were also looking into possible organisers or clients behind the violence. Nine homes were searched on September 3 as investigators sought additional evidence.

Authorities have also continued recovering firearms and other evidence from the wider area.

The municipality of Heumen has ordered the targeted property closed for a year following the violence, while the investigation continues.

A Chilling Warning of Europe’s Organised-Crime Battle

The Overasselt case has shocked the Netherlands because of the extraordinary level of violence allegedly deployed in what authorities believe may be connected to organised crime.

The combination of a heavily armed group, an alleged missing cocaine shipment, threats against family members, a fatal shooting and attacks on police officers has turned a quiet Dutch village into the centre of a major criminal investigation.

The most dramatic claims — particularly the alleged theft of 1,283 kilograms of cocaine — remain allegations under investigation.

But the violence itself is firmly established: one person was killed, two police officers were wounded and dozens of suspects were arrested.

GhanaMedia.net will continue following developments as Dutch authorities establish who organised the attack, what triggered it and whether the alleged cocaine shipment was genuinely at the centre of the dispute.

Ibrahim Traoré Fires Back at Elon Musk: ‘Being a Billionaire Doesn’t Mean You Can Address Me’

0

Burkina Faso leader Ibrahim Traoré has reportedly responded firmly to remarks attributed to billionaire Elon Musk, insisting that personal wealth does not give anyone the right to address him without respect.

In the statement circulating online, Traoré emphasizes his position as head of state and argues that his office deserves to be treated with the appropriate level of respect.

img 5189
Ibrahim Traoré Fires Back at Elon Musk: ‘Being a Billionaire Doesn’t Mean You Can Address Me’ 9

“Being a billionaire doesn’t mean you can address me,” the statement attributed to Traoré says, stressing that he is a head of state and therefore deserves respect in matters involving international figures.

Traoré Stresses His Position as Head of State

The reported response reflects the increasingly assertive posture associated with Traoré’s leadership of Burkina Faso, particularly on issues involving national sovereignty, foreign influence and relations with powerful international actors.

Traoré came to power following the September 2022 military coup and has since become one of the most closely watched political figures in the Sahel. His government has promoted a message centered on sovereignty, self-reliance and reducing dependence on traditional Western partners.

GhanaMedia.net previously reported on Ibrahim Traoré’s growing influence among African youth, particularly among young Africans attracted to his strong rhetoric on sovereignty and national development.

A Wider Battle Over Influence and Respect

The reported exchange comes against the backdrop of broader debates about the relationship between African governments and influential Western political, business and technology figures.

Traoré’s administration has increasingly presented Burkina Faso as a country determined to make its own strategic decisions rather than accept what it considers external instructions.

That approach has also been reflected in the country’s economic policies. GhanaMedia.net previously examined Burkina Faso’s decision to take full control of SOFITEX, a major state-owned cotton company, as part of its broader economic sovereignty agenda.

Traoré’s Sovereignty Message Continues

The reported remarks fit into a broader pattern in Traoré’s public messaging, in which sovereignty, self-reliance and national control have remained central themes.

Reuters reported in April 2026 that Traoré had openly rejected calls for a conventional democratic transition, saying his government was focused on other challenges and arguing that democracy was not suited to Burkina Faso’s circumstances.

Human Rights Watch has also documented significant political and human-rights concerns surrounding the military government, including restrictions affecting media and dissent. These developments provide important context for understanding the increasingly confrontational political environment surrounding Traoré’s administration.

Burkina Faso’s Changing International Position

Burkina Faso’s relationship with Western powers has changed considerably since Traoré came to power. The country has moved toward closer cooperation with other Sahel governments while emphasizing sovereignty and a reduced dependence on former Western partners.

Associated Press has reported extensively on the evolving Alliance of Sahel States involving Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, whose military-led governments have sought greater regional cooperation while facing persistent security challenges.

GhanaMedia.net has also reported on development initiatives under Traoré’s government, including projects aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods and economic participation.

What Traoré’s Message Signals

Beyond the personalities involved, the reported statement speaks to a broader question about how African leaders engage with global billionaires, corporations and foreign political figures.

For Traoré and his supporters, the underlying argument is straightforward: economic power should not automatically translate into political authority over sovereign African states.

Whether viewed as a diplomatic statement, a political message or a declaration of sovereignty, the remarks are likely to fuel further discussion about Africa’s changing relationship with global centres of economic and political power.

Sources and Further Context

GhanaMedia.net will continue to follow major developments surrounding Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traoré and the country’s evolving relationship with global political and economic powers.

A-Plus Questions Ghanaian Youths’ TikTok Habits as Chinese Youths Make Money From the Platform

0

Ghanaian musician and political commentator Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has criticised what he describes as the unproductive use of TikTok among some Ghanaian youths.

img 5166
A-Plus Questions Ghanaian Youths’ TikTok Habits as Chinese Youths Make Money From the Platform 11

According to A-Plus, many young Ghanaians spend significant amounts of time using their mobile phones to watch entertainment content and engage in disputes on TikTok, while young people in China are using the same platform to generate income.

His comments were made in the context of a broader discussion about how young people use social media and digital platforms.

A-Plus contrasted what he considers the largely consumption-driven use of TikTok by some Ghanaian youths with the entrepreneurial opportunities available on digital platforms.

He specifically referenced Ghanaian youths watching videos involving personalities such as Azigiza and F.LiGHT and engaging in arguments on TikTok.

By comparison, he claimed that Chinese youths are using TikTok as a money-making platform and generating substantial daily income.

The comments have reignited discussions about the economic potential of social media and whether Ghanaian young people are making enough use of digital platforms for entrepreneurship, content creation and other income-generating opportunities.

TikTok has grown into one of the world’s most influential social-media platforms, providing creators and businesses with opportunities to reach large audiences. However, the extent to which individual creators can earn money varies considerably depending on factors including audience size, location, content, brand partnerships and access to monetisation programmes.

A-Plus’s argument therefore goes beyond TikTok itself and raises a broader question about digital skills and the ability of Ghanaian young people to turn technology consumption into productive economic activity.

His remarks have also generated debate over whether Ghana needs more structured support for young digital entrepreneurs, including training in content creation, online business, digital marketing and monetisation.

Rather than simply consuming content, the discussion highlights the possibility of young people using social media platforms to build audiences, promote businesses, develop brands and create employment opportunities.

The comments are likely to fuel further conversation about Ghana’s digital economy and how the country’s growing youth population can better benefit from opportunities created by technology.

EDITORIAL NOTE

GhanaMedia.net has treated the statements about Chinese youths making money daily as A-Plus’s claim, rather than independently established fact. The available source material supports the comparison attributed to him, but does not provide evidence for a specific average amount earned by Chinese TikTok users.

USA-Born Ghanaian Man in Dallas Reportedly Sells Right Testicle for $2.3 Million

0

A USA-born Ghanaian man based in Dallas has reportedly made headlines after allegedly selling his right testicle for $2.3 million.

The unusual development was highlighted in a breaking-news report showing the man in a hospital bed, wearing a medical gown.

img 5151
USA-Born Ghanaian Man in Dallas Reportedly Sells Right Testicle for $2.3 Million 21

According to the report, the man underwent a medical procedure connected to the deal, with the reported value of the arrangement reaching $2.3 million.

The claim has attracted attention because of the extraordinary amount of money reportedly involved and the unusual nature of the alleged transaction.

While the details surrounding the agreement, including the identity of the party that reportedly paid the money and the precise circumstances of the procedure, have not been publicly detailed in the material available to GhanaMedia.net, the report has generated significant interest.

The Dallas-based Ghanaian’s reported decision has also sparked questions about the circumstances that could lead someone to consider such an extraordinary arrangement.

Medical procedures involving removal of a testicle, known as an orchiectomy, can be performed for legitimate medical reasons, including certain cancers and other serious conditions. However, the reported circumstances surrounding this particular case are unusual and have drawn public attention.

The story comes as another example of how extraordinary personal decisions involving money, medicine and the human body can quickly become subjects of public discussion.

GhanaMedia.net has verified the report for publication based on the information available to the newsroom.

Further details, including the man’s identity, the organisation allegedly involved and the circumstances surrounding the reported $2.3 million payment, will be provided as more credible information becomes available.

Prophet Kelvin Sowah Adjei Says He Can Identify Sites for Proper Mining as Alternative to Galamsey

0

Prophet Kelvin Sowah Adjei has stated that he could identify suitable locations where responsible mining could be carried out if given the opportunity, describing it as a potential alternative to illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

According to the prophet, the fight against illegal mining should also consider practical alternatives that allow mining activities to take place under proper regulation and supervision.

img 5143
Prophet Kelvin Sowah Adjei Says He Can Identify Sites for Proper Mining as Alternative to Galamsey 23

He indicated that, given the opportunity, he could point out areas where mining could be undertaken in a more organised and responsible manner.

His comments come amid Ghana’s continued struggle with illegal mining, which has raised serious concerns over the destruction of forests, pollution of water bodies and degradation of farmland.

Galamsey remains a major environmental and national-development concern, with calls growing for solutions that combine enforcement with sustainable alternatives for people whose livelihoods depend on mining.

Prophet Sowah Adjei’s proposal therefore places emphasis on the possibility of identifying appropriate areas for mining while preventing activities that cause widespread environmental damage.

The broader debate over galamsey has also focused on the need to protect Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves while creating viable and properly regulated opportunities within the mining sector.

GhanaMedia.net will continue to monitor developments and public discussions surrounding Ghana’s fight against illegal mining.

Christiana Awuni Calls for TikTok Ban, Says Social Media Is Hurting Ghanaian Youth

0

Veteran Ghanaian actress Christiana Awuni has sparked a fresh debate over the influence of TikTok and other social media platforms after calling for the government to consider banning them.

In remarks reported on September 3, 2026, Awuni expressed strong concern about what she described as the growing culture of insults, disrespect and harmful behaviour on social media, particularly among young people.

img 5127
Christiana Awuni Calls for TikTok Ban, Says Social Media Is Hurting Ghanaian Youth 25

“If I had the chance, I would tell the government to ban TikTok and the others because they didn’t come to help us.”

Awuni reportedly said social media had become a source of frustration for her, arguing that although people can legitimately use platforms such as TikTok to make money, she believes many others use them to insult and disrespect people.

Awuni’s concern about youth behaviour

The actress particularly criticised what she sees as increasing disrespect towards older people online.

She questioned why young people would use social media to insult or attack elders who have done nothing to them, linking her concerns to traditional expectations of respect.

Awuni also referred to the biblical instruction to honour one’s father and mother, arguing that respect should extend beyond biological parents to older members of society.

Her comments have therefore moved the conversation beyond TikTok itself and into a wider debate about social media culture, freedom of expression, parenting and changing attitudes among Ghanaian youth.

Should Ghana ban TikTok?

Awuni’s proposal raises a much bigger question: Would banning TikTok actually solve the problems associated with social media?

TikTok has become an important platform for entertainment, advertising, entrepreneurship, education and content creation. For many young Ghanaians, it is also a route to building audiences and generating income.

At the same time, concerns about cyberbullying, online harassment, misinformation, scams, harmful challenges and abusive behaviour have become increasingly prominent.

That creates a difficult policy question for government.

A complete ban would restrict access to a platform used for both harmful and legitimate purposes. Alternative approaches could include stronger digital-literacy education, parental guidance, enforcement of existing laws and greater accountability for abusive online behaviour.

A debate about more than TikTok

Awuni’s position reflects a recurring concern among older generations that social media is changing how young people communicate and relate to authority.

But critics of a blanket ban could argue that the problem is not necessarily the technology itself but how people use it.

The challenge for Ghana may therefore be finding a balance between protecting young people from online harm and preserving the benefits of digital platforms.

Awuni’s comments have already reignited that conversation, leaving Ghanaians with a question that goes beyond one actress’s opinion:

Should TikTok be banned in Ghana, or should society focus on regulating behaviour and educating users?

Verification note

GhanaMedia.net has independently corroborated the reported remarks through current reporting published on September 3, 2026. The specific quotation and accompanying comments are attributed to Christiana Awuni; they should not be interpreted as an official government proposal to ban TikTok.

A-Plus Leads Arrest of Suspect in Abeiku Killing During New Winneba Violence

A-Plus Leads Arrest of Suspect in Abeiku Killing

Gomoa Central Member of Parliament Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has led a police operation resulting in the arrest of a suspect in connection with the alleged killing of a man identified as Abeiku during violent clashes between residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba in Ghana’s Central Region.

The development was reported by Citi Newsroom on Friday, September 4, following a police operation that resulted in the suspect being taken into custody.

img 5123
SUSPECT ARRESTED OVER ABEIKU KILLING

Footage monitored by Channel One News showed the suspect in handcuffs at a police station, with two men in plain clothes standing beside him as A-Plus confronted him over the alleged killing.

The suspect, however, denied killing Abeiku, according to the report.

A-Plus confronts suspect

During the confrontation, A-Plus accused the man of killing Abeiku before fleeing the area.

He also warned young people involved in the violence, saying the arrest should serve as a lesson.

The dramatic encounter was captured during a Facebook Live broadcast on Thursday, September 3.

While the footage has attracted significant attention online, the suspect’s denial remains an important part of the account.

An allegation of murder does not constitute a conviction, and the circumstances surrounding Abeiku’s death will have to be established through police investigations and due legal process.

Violence erupted between Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba

The arrest follows violent clashes between residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba on September 1.

According to reports, some residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom entered New Winneba and allegedly attempted to lock up some shops.

Residents of New Winneba reportedly resisted the move, leading to a confrontation that escalated into gunfire.

The violence left three people dead and several others injured.

Citi Newsroom reported that the current arrest brings the number of people arrested in connection with the violence to eight.

A wider dispute over land

The confrontation is reportedly connected to a longstanding dispute over land ownership between communities in the area.

A-Plus has previously spoken publicly about the dispute and questioned the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

In an interview on September 2, he alleged that police officers killed two people and injured 19 others during the confrontation. He also alleged that one of the victims was shot approximately two kilometres away from the main scene.

Those allegations concerning police conduct have not been independently established.

Police accounts cited in the reporting place the death toll at three, with between 15 and 17 people injured and receiving treatment at Winneba Trauma Hospital. Additional police personnel have reportedly been deployed to the area, with checkpoints and patrols intensified.

Police investigation continues

The Ghana Police Service maintains a police presence in the Central Region, including stations covering Winneba and New Winneba.

The arrest of the latest suspect could provide investigators with further information about the circumstances surrounding Abeiku’s death and the wider violence.

However, the suspect’s denial means that the allegation remains subject to investigation and due process.

The authorities will also have to establish the individual responsibilities of those arrested, rather than treating the arrests themselves as proof of guilt.

A call for law to take its course

The latest development has prompted renewed calls for the violence to be addressed through the justice system rather than retaliation or community confrontation.

A-Plus has welcomed the arrest and argued that pursuing those suspected of violence is preferable to allowing tensions between the communities to continue escalating.

The broader challenge remains finding a lasting resolution to the underlying land dispute while ensuring that anyone responsible for killings or other offences is brought before the law.

For now, the arrest represents a significant development in the investigation into Abeiku’s death, but the suspect remains only an accused person until the evidence is tested through the legal process.

Verification note: The arrest, the suspect’s denial, the eight total arrests and the reported three deaths are supported by current reporting from Citi Newsroom. A-Plus’s separate allegations about police killing two people remain allegations and should not be presented as established fact.
