The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor (MP), has launched a major turnkey electrification project aimed at extending electricity supply to 206 communities across 18 districts in the Volta Region.
The project, being implemented under the Government’s Rural Electrification Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative (REIP), forms part of Government’s broader commitment to reducing poverty, creating jobs and promoting socio-economic development through improved access to electricity.
Government Launches Turnkey Electrification Project to Connect 206 Communities in Volta Region 5
Speaking at the launch held at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), Hon. Jinapor said the project would significantly improve electricity access for communities currently without reliable power supply, and communities that needed extension.
The project is being undertaken by Byes and Ways Limited and is expected to be completed within six months.
The Minister also announced significant investments to strengthen electricity transmission and improve power supply in Ho and other parts of the Volta Region.
According to Hon. Jinapor, Government is undertaking the construction of a 161kV transmission line from Asiekpe to Ho, which is expected to improve voltage levels and enhance the reliability of electricity supply in the region.
He further announced the construction of a new substation in Ho, which would provide the regional capital with a dedicated transformer and transmission line.
The facility is expected to ease pressure on the existing transformer and transmission infrastructure and improve the reliability of power supply to Ho and surrounding communities.
The transmission and substation project is being undertaken by Tilt Engineering Limited and is expected to be completed within 12 months.

The Minister also addressed concerns about complaints of overbilling by consumers. He said the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) would independently investigate complaints to ensure that customers receive accurate bills based on their actual consumption.
He explained that where investigations establish that faulty meters are responsible for billing discrepancies, the affected meters would be replaced.
Following the launch, a short handover ceremony was held at the GRIDCo Substation, where the project was formally handed over to Tilt Engineering Limited by Hon. Jinapor and the Chief Executive of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere, and Mr. David Asamoah, Deputy Managing Director, Special Duties ECG.
The ceremony brought together key stakeholders from the energy sector and the Volta Region, including Chiefs from the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, the Deputy Managing Director, Special Duties, Mr. Asamoah; Director of Engineering, Ing. Jacqueline A. Ofori-Atta; Regional General Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta Region, Ms. Christina Jatoe-Kaleo; Ho District Manager, Mr. Emmanuel Offei; Commercial Manager, Mr. Solomon Adjiku; other ECG regional staff; and officials of GRIDCo.
The project is expected to contribute significantly to expanding electricity access, strengthening the transmission network and improving the quality and reliability of electricity supply across the Volta Region.
The Government has urged beneficiary communities, traditional authorities, local authorities and other stakeholders to cooperate with the contractors to ensure the timely and successful completion of the projects.
Accra, August 28, 2026 — MTN Ghana has organised its maiden Sustainability Workshop for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), equipping entrepreneurs and business leaders with practical knowledge and tools to integrate sustainability into their operations.
The workshop, held in partnership with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Global, brought together founders, entrepreneurs and business leaders to explore practical ways of embedding sustainability into everyday business decisions.

As part of the initiative, MTN Ghana also launched a sustainability competition for SMEs, giving participating businesses an opportunity to present ideas on how they intend to adopt sustainable practices within their operations.
MTN Ghana: Sustainability Must Extend Beyond Corporate Social Investment
Speaking at the workshop, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, said the initiative formed part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary and reflected the company’s Force for Good philosophy.
The philosophy seeks to harness technology, partnerships and responsible business practices to generate positive social, environmental and economic impact.
MTN Ghana, ACCA Equip SMEs with Practical Sustainability Tools at Maiden Workshop 10
She explained that MTN Ghana’s approach to sustainability had evolved beyond traditional corporate social investment towards embedding responsible practices within its operations and contribution to national development.
“We believe that we cannot grow if our communities around us are not growing,” she said.
According to her, MTN Ghana has consistently invested in areas including health, education and economic empowerment as part of its broader contribution to communities.
She encouraged SMEs to recognise that sustainability is not an undertaking reserved for large corporations, stressing that businesses of all sizes can take practical steps towards operating more responsibly.
Among the measures she highlighted were reducing waste, managing plastic use, improving energy efficiency and developing the digital capabilities of employees.
“There are small things that we can all do, and collectively we will see the impact that that makes,” she added.
MTN Highlights Its Own Sustainability Efforts
Ms Afriyie Wiafe pointed to MTN Ghana’s efforts to reduce energy consumption as an example of how businesses can identify opportunities for sustainability within their own operations.
She cited the installation of solar panels at MTN House as one initiative demonstrating how businesses can adopt cleaner and more efficient approaches to their energy needs.
The message to SMEs was therefore not simply to understand sustainability as a concept, but to identify practical changes that can be introduced gradually and sustained over time.
ACCA Seeks to Make Sustainability More Accessible to SMEs
The Business Manager of ACCA, Gameli Datsomor, said the partnership with MTN Ghana was aimed at making sustainability more accessible to SMEs.
He noted that SMEs are often left out of major sustainability discussions despite their significant contribution to economic activity, employment and livelihoods.
MTN Ghana, ACCA Equip SMEs with Practical Sustainability Tools at Maiden Workshop 11
According to him, ACCA has developed resources specifically targeted at SMEs and was pleased to collaborate with MTN Ghana to help businesses understand sustainability principles and apply them in practical ways.
The partnership therefore seeks to bridge the gap between sustainability discussions and the realities faced by smaller businesses.
Experts Highlight ESG and Climate Responsibility
The workshop also featured a presentation by Dr Thelma Frimpong Mensah, an ESG Specialist, who encouraged entrepreneurs to pay closer attention to their businesses’ carbon footprints and align their decisions with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
She described sustainability as conducting business and living today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Dr Frimpong Mensah also cautioned SMEs against greenwashing, urging businesses to ensure that sustainability claims are supported by genuine and measurable action.
Her presentation reinforced the importance of moving beyond statements about environmental responsibility towards practical changes that can produce meaningful results.
KPMG Shares the SME Approach to Sustainability
The workshop further featured a presentation by KPMG’s Kofi Osei Asenso on “Creating the Sustainable World: The SME Way.”
The session focused on practical approaches SMEs can adopt to develop more resilient and responsible businesses while incorporating sustainability into their growth strategies.
For many SMEs, the challenge is often determining where to begin.
The workshop sought to demonstrate that sustainability can be incorporated through incremental changes in areas such as resource management, energy consumption, employee development, waste reduction and responsible business practices.
Bringing Businesses into Ghana’s Sustainability Journey
The event was attended by members of MTN and MoMo’s Sustainability Working Group, including the Acting General Manager of Sustainability, Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, and Charles Osei Owusu, Senior Manager for Fintech Business Development, MML Operations, alongside other officials.
With sustainability increasingly influencing how businesses operate, access finance and respond to changing consumer and regulatory expectations, MTN Ghana hopes the initiative will encourage more SMEs to integrate responsible practices into their businesses.
The sustainability competition also provides an opportunity for participating SMEs to move from discussion to action by presenting practical ideas for incorporating sustainability into their operations.
For Ghana’s SME sector, which plays a significant role in economic activity and livelihoods, the message from the workshop was clear: sustainability does not have to begin with massive investments.
It can start with small, deliberate and measurable changes that, when adopted across thousands of businesses, can contribute to a more resilient private sector and a more sustainable Ghanaian economy.
The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has officially launched activities to mark its 40th anniversary, celebrating four decades of growth, resilience, innovation and contribution to Ghana’s economic development while outlining an ambitious vision for the future of the country’s maritime sector.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the leadership of GPHA reflected on the Authority’s remarkable journey since its establishment, highlighting its transformation into a modern institution that serves as a critical gateway for Ghana’s international trade and a key logistics hub for the West African sub-region.

In a welcome address, the Director-General of GPHA described the anniversary as more than a celebration of the Authority’s age, noting that it represents four decades of resilience, transformation, innovation and dedicated service by generations of employees whose efforts have shaped the institution’s success. He emphasized that GPHA has remained steadfast in its mandate to plan, build, manage and operate Ghana’s seaports efficiently and safely, facilitating trade and supporting national development.
The Director-General noted that over the years, GPHA has recorded significant achievements in port modernization, operational efficiency, infrastructure development, technology adoption, environmental sustainability, safety and customer service. He attributed these accomplishments to strong collaboration between government, shipping lines, terminal operators, freight forwarders, regulators, development partners and other stakeholders across the maritime value chain.
GPHA Launches 40th Anniversary Celebrations, Reaffirms Commitment to Maritime Excellence and National Development 15
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Board Chairman of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, said the 40th anniversary marks a significant milestone in the Authority’s history since its establishment under PNDC Law 160 in 1986. He noted that GPHA was created to unify key port-related entities and improve the management and operational efficiency of Ghana’s ports to support trade and economic growth.
According to the Board Chairman, the ports of Tema and Takoradi have evolved into strategic national assets that facilitate international trade, support industrial activity and promote regional integration. He stated that the Authority has consistently pursued strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing competitiveness, operational efficiency and service delivery in an increasingly dynamic global maritime environment.
The Chairman highlighted several major developments that have strengthened Ghana’s maritime infrastructure, including the expansion of Tema Port and ongoing transformation projects at Takoradi Port. He observed that investments in port infrastructure, automation and advanced information technology systems have enabled Ghana’s ports to handle growing cargo volumes and accommodate diverse vessel types.
Among the achievements cited were the development of a 3.5 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) container terminal, the Dry Bulk Terminal, and the Takoradi Natural Gas Liquids Export Terminal, all of which have enhanced cargo-handling capacity and operational efficiency. The Chairman also pointed to the planned Takoradi Floating Dock Project, backed by £101 million in financing, as an initiative expected to strengthen Ghana’s ship repair capabilities and reinforce Takoradi’s position as a leading maritime hub in the region.
The Board Chairman further underscored GPHA’s role in regional trade facilitation, noting the establishment of a dedicated transit container terminal at Tema Port to serve neighbouring landlocked countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. He added that the Kpone Unity Terminal was developed to ease congestion and improve transit operations.
Looking ahead, both the Board and Management expressed a shared commitment to building smarter, greener and more efficient ports capable of supporting Ghana’s industrialisation agenda and opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Authority also intends to deepen stakeholder engagement, promote environmental sustainability and inspire the next generation of maritime professionals through activities planned for the anniversary year.
The leadership of GPHA paid tribute to former leaders, retired staff and current employees for their contributions to the Authority’s success, while thanking government, customers, business partners, traditional authorities, regulators and the media for their continued support.
Zoomlion Ghana Limited has intensified its seven-day disinfection and disinfestation exercise across the Oti Region as part of efforts to prevent disease outbreaks and improve environmental sanitation following recent flooding in parts of the country.
Zoomlion Intensifies Disinfection and Disinfestation Exercise in Oti Region 17
The exercise, which commenced simultaneously in the Krachi East and West Municipalities, is expected to cover all nine Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the region. It is being undertaken in collaboration with the respective Assemblies, which have identified priority areas requiring the intervention.
The exercise targets markets, shops and sheds, public toilets, drains and gutters, refuse container sites, waste-dumping areas, flood-prone communities and other public spaces considered potential breeding grounds for disease vectors and harmful pathogens.
Speaking to the media during the exercise, the Oti Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr. Joseph Buabeng, said the intervention formed part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its broader commitment to protecting public health and supporting local authorities in addressing sanitation challenges.
He explained that the intervention went beyond conventional fumigation to include comprehensive disinfection and disinfestation aimed at controlling disease vectors, reducing harmful pathogens and mitigating the risk of waterborne and other communicable diseases associated with flooding and poor sanitation.
“Our objective is to protect residents from diseases that commonly emerge after flooding. We do not want to wait until there is an outbreak before taking action. This is a proactive measure aimed at safeguarding public health and protecting lives,” Mr. Buabeng stated.
According to him, floodwaters could carry sewage, waste and other contaminants into drains, waterways and public spaces, thereby increasing the risk of diseases such as cholera, particularly in communities already facing sanitation challenges.
Mr. Buabeng said particular attention was being given to waste-dumping sites and areas close to water bodies, where decomposing waste, leachate and increased fly populations could create significant environmental and public health risks.
He added that the exercise was in line with a directive from the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, to support communities across the country in controlling vector-borne diseases and reducing the threat posed by harmful pathogens.
Beyond the immediate intervention, Mr. Buabeng called for sustainable and long-term solutions to Ghana’s sanitation challenges. These, he said, should include the development and maintenance of properly engineered landfill sites, stronger regulation of waste transportation and the establishment of strategically located waste transfer stations in rapidly growing municipalities.
The Environmental Health Officer at the Krachi East Municipal Assembly, Mr. Adem Atiase, commended Zoomlion for the intervention and expressed appreciation to the company for undertaking the exercise as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
He noted that the exercise would complement the Assembly’s environmental health efforts and contribute to making public spaces safer, cleaner and healthier for residents.
The intervention forms part of Zoomlion’s nationwide disinfection and disinfestation programme, which seeks to strengthen collaboration with local authorities, improve environmental sanitation, control disease vectors, prevent potential disease outbreaks and promote cleaner, safer and healthier communities across the country.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is set to receive a major boost to its firefighting capacity, with the first batch of 100 new fire tenders expected by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak announced the development as government intensifies efforts to retool the Service and improve emergency response across the country. The announcement was reported by GHOne TV on August 27, 2026.
Ghana National Fire Service to Receive First Batch of 100 Fire Tenders by Early 2027 21
The planned acquisition forms part of government’s broader programme to address the ageing and inadequate equipment currently confronting the GNFS.
Government moves to strengthen firefighting capacity
The commitment to procure 100 fire tenders was already outlined in the 2026 Budget, which stated that government would retool the Ghana National Fire Service with 100 fire tenders and assorted firefighting equipment for distribution across the country.
Government also indicated that it would work with the private sector to bring in specialised high-rise firefighting equipment, with the broader objective of improving the Service’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
The Interior Ministry subsequently confirmed in May that processes were far advanced for the procurement of the 100 fire engines and additional rescue equipment.
A long-standing equipment challenge
The announcement comes against the backdrop of concerns about the condition and availability of firefighting equipment across the country.
The 2026 Budget itself acknowledged that the Ghana National Fire Service lacked basic equipment needed to effectively perform its mandate of protecting lives and property.
Regional authorities have also highlighted the challenge.
In August, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene said government was committed to retooling the GNFS with 100 new fire tenders, describing the intervention as necessary in addressing challenges posed by ageing equipment.
Recent support for the Fire Service
The planned procurement follows other efforts to strengthen the Service.
In May 2026, government commissioned several utility vehicles for the GNFS, including Toyota Hiace minibuses, Nissan Navara pickups and a Toyota Camry. The Interior Minister said the vehicles were intended to improve mobility and emergency response.
The Service also received a Mercedes-Benz fire tender and firefighting equipment donated by Fire Aid & International Development in the United Kingdom, with the handover taking place in May.
Beyond physical equipment, the government has been pursuing technological reforms. The GNFS launched the Automated Fire Safety Compliance System (AFCAS) to digitise fire-safety inspections, certification and compliance monitoring.
What the 100 tenders could mean
If delivered as announced, the new fire tenders could significantly improve the operational reach of firefighters across Ghana.
The additional vehicles are expected to provide greater capacity for responding to fires in residential areas, markets, industrial facilities and other high-risk locations, while reducing pressure on ageing equipment already in service.
However, the effectiveness of the investment will ultimately depend not only on the number of new tenders delivered but also on their distribution, maintenance, staffing, fuel availability and operational readiness.
For communities that have repeatedly raised concerns about delayed firefighting response, the arrival of the new equipment will therefore be closely watched.
With the first batch now expected by the end of Q1 2027, attention will shift to whether the procurement timeline is met and how quickly the equipment can be deployed nationwide.
A disturbing case involving a young Nigerian man who reportedly discovered that one of his kidneys was missing has triggered renewed concerns about patient safety, informed consent and possible illegal organ trafficking in Nigeria.
The case came to public attention after the young man, identified in reports as Ezekiel Samuel, approached social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), on August 18, 2026, seeking help over the alleged disappearance of his left kidney.
Young Nigerian Man’s Missing Kidney Case Sparks Fresh Organ-Trafficking Concerns 23
According to reports citing VDM, medical examinations were subsequently conducted at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja and the Federal Medical Centre in Jabi. The examinations reportedly indicated that Samuel’s left kidney was absent.
The allegation
Samuel reportedly claimed that he had visited a hospital in Abuja and later discovered that one of his kidneys was missing. The circumstances surrounding the alleged removal remain the subject of investigation.
The case took another dramatic turn after VDM said information gathered during his intervention pointed toward a friend who allegedly took Samuel to the hospital.
Reports citing VDM say the police became involved and arrested the friend. According to the account, investigators discovered that the friend was also missing a kidney and that he had allegedly sold his own kidney for ₦7 million.
At current exchange rates, ₦7 million is approximately GH₵58,300, although the exact cedi equivalent fluctuates with the exchange rate.
A wider concern
The reported ₦7 million payment has intensified questions about whether vulnerable people may be being recruited into an illegal organ trade.
VDM has also claimed that information gathered during his intervention suggested that other people living in the same area may have sold their kidneys.
Those claims, however, remain allegations and should not be treated as established fact without confirmation from law-enforcement investigations, medical records or court proceedings.
There is an important distinction between establishing that a person’s kidney is absent and proving that it was illegally removed.
Authorities would need to establish when the kidney became absent, what medical procedure the individual underwent, where it occurred, whether valid consent was given, who participated and whether money changed hands.
Police investigation
The reported case has already attracted law-enforcement attention, with reports stating that police arrested a suspect connected to the allegations.
Separately, a report published on August 27 said Nigerian police had arrested several suspects in a different alleged organ-harvesting investigation in Nasarawa State. Police reportedly said the suspects targeted vulnerable people and that one alleged victim was linked to a kidney removal for which ₦7 million was reportedly paid.
Because the cases involve serious criminal allegations, the identities of suspects and the precise circumstances should be treated carefully until formal charges, investigative findings or court proceedings establish responsibility.
Why the case matters
Kidney transplantation depends on strict medical, ethical and legal safeguards. Any allegation that an organ was removed without informed consent raises serious questions about medical accountability and the protection of vulnerable patients.
The developing Nigerian cases are therefore likely to intensify calls for stronger oversight of transplant procedures, improved patient documentation and more effective action against illegal organ trafficking.
For now, the circumstances surrounding Samuel’s missing kidney remain under investigation. Claims that a particular doctor, hospital or wider network was responsible should not be presented as proven unless supported by verified investigative or judicial findings.
What is clear is that the allegations have opened a deeply troubling conversation about poverty, vulnerability, medical consent and the potential exploitation of people desperate for money.

A senior New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure popularly known as Chairman Buga has reportedly questioned the 20-year prison sentence handed to former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
In remarks circulating online, Buga is heard questioning the length of Wontumi’s sentence and raising concerns about the effect of a prolonged prison term on his family and children.
The comment comes amid continued political and public debate over Wontumi’s conviction and imprisonment.
Wontumi’s 20-year sentence
On July 20, 2026, an Accra High Court sentenced Wontumi to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after finding him guilty of offences connected to illegal mining operations on the Samreboi concession in the Western Region. The court imposed two 20-year custodial sentences, but ordered them to run concurrently, meaning the effective sentence is 20 years.
The court also imposed fines on Wontumi and Akonta Mining Company Limited.
The prosecution’s case centred on allegations that mineral rights connected to the concession were assigned without the required ministerial approval and that Wontumi deliberately facilitated unlicensed mining operations.
NPP challenges the conviction
The NPP has rejected the judgment and announced plans to challenge the conviction.
The party’s General Secretary, Justice Frimpong Koduah, described the judgment as fundamentally flawed and said the party would pursue an appeal.
Wontumi’s legal team has subsequently filed an application seeking bail pending the appeal. However, the application was adjourned to October 15, 2026, after the judge scheduled to hear it became indisposed.
Wontumi remains in custody at Nsawam Medium Security Prison while the legal process continues.
Debate over the sentence
The case has generated strong reactions across Ghana, with supporters and political actors expressing differing views about the conviction and punishment.
Some critics of the sentence have questioned whether 20 years is proportionate, while others have argued that serious sanctions are necessary to deter illegal mining and protect Ghana’s forests, water bodies and mineral resources.
Buga’s reported comments add another dimension to the debate, focusing not only on the legal consequences but also on the personal and family impact of a lengthy prison sentence.
The case remains subject to the appellate process, meaning the final legal outcome could still change.
