Proforest Presents 22 Motorbikes to Boost Forest Protection in Ahafo Region

0

Proforest has presented 22 motorbikes to the Ahafo Regional Forestry Commission to strengthen forest patrols, improve access to remote forest areas and support restoration activities across the Asunafo-Asutifi landscape.

The presentation was made under the Support for Forest Protection and Rehabilitation in the Asunafo-Asutifi Landscape project, implemented as part of the Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme with support from Mondelēz International, Barry Callebaut and Sainsbury’s Supermarket.

The project aims to rehabilitate approximately 450 hectares of severely degraded forest reserve areas, with particular focus on the Asutifi North Sub-Hotspot Intervention Area.

The newly presented motorbikes are expected to help field officers navigate difficult terrain, respond more quickly to illegal activities and monitor restoration sites more consistently.

Forest reserves in Ghana’s cocoa-producing landscapes continue to face pressure from degradation, encroachment and limited access for frontline officers. The support demonstrates how private-sector investment in cocoa sustainability can translate into practical action for forest protection, climate resilience and deforestation-free cocoa production.

Speaking on the initiative, Abraham Baffoe, Global and Africa Director of Proforest, said the support would strengthen the Forestry Commission’s capacity to protect forest reserves and monitor restoration activities across the landscape.

“This support will enhance the Forestry Commission’s ability to protect forest reserves and monitor restoration activities across the landscape,” Mr Baffoe said.

He added that improving mobility for frontline officers would help strengthen day-to-day forest protection, safeguard restoration investments and advance practical action towards climate-resilient, deforestation-free cocoa landscapes.

The Ahafo Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Rev. Edward Opoku Antwi, welcomed the donation, describing the motorbikes as timely support for forest protection efforts in the region.

“These motorbikes come at a critical time for forest protection in the region,” Rev. Opoku Antwi said.

According to him, the motorbikes will enable officers to reach remote areas more quickly, improve surveillance of the reserves and support restoration activities taking place across the Asunafo-Asutifi landscape.

Supporting Forest Protection and Restoration

Proforest works with companies, governments and civil society partners to support responsible production and sourcing of agricultural commodities.

The Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme seeks to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation while promoting sustainable cocoa landscapes.

The Asunafo-Asutifi landscape is one of Ghana’s priority cocoa-forest landscapes for restoration and forest protection interventions.

The provision of the 22 motorbikes is expected to improve the operational capacity of forestry officers while supporting ongoing efforts to protect forest reserves, restore degraded areas and promote more sustainable cocoa production in the Ahafo Region.

Laetitia Ky Turns Her Hair Into Powerful Art, Challenging Stereotypes Through Creativity

0

Ivorian artist and activist Laetitia Ky has transformed natural hair into an extraordinary medium for artistic expression, creating intricate sculptures that explore identity, womanhood, culture and social issues.

Based in Côte d’Ivoire, Ky has gained international recognition for turning her own hair, alongside extensions, wire and other materials, into elaborate three-dimensional sculptures. Her creations have ranged from animals and objects to symbolic representations of social and political issues.

What began as an experiment with natural hair has grown into a distinctive artistic practice that has attracted a global audience and positioned Ky as one of Africa’s most recognisable contemporary hair artists.

From natural hair to artistic expression

Ky’s journey into hair sculpture was inspired in part by images of African women and their elaborate hairstyles from before colonisation. She became fascinated by the idea that hairstyles could communicate identity, status, culture and other aspects of a person’s life.

She began experimenting with her own hair and sharing the results online. The work quickly attracted attention, with audiences around the world responding to the creativity and symbolism behind her unusual designs.

Ky has explained that some of her sculptures can be completed relatively quickly, while more complicated pieces may require several hours of planning and construction.

Hair as a voice for social issues

For Ky, the sculptures are about more than visual creativity. Her work frequently addresses issues surrounding women’s rights, body autonomy, identity, beauty standards and the experiences of Black women.

Her artistic approach allows her to communicate messages without relying solely on conventional forms of activism. A sculpture can become both an artwork and a statement, with the hairstyle itself carrying the message.

In her TED Talk, Ky described how her relationship with her natural hair changed after years of using hair relaxers. Returning to natural hair eventually became part of a broader journey of self-acceptance and appreciation of her African identity.

An African story told through hair

Ky’s work also draws attention to the cultural significance of African hairstyles. Historically, hairstyles across different African societies could communicate information about identity, social position, marital status, religion and community.

By turning hair into sculpture, Ky brings elements of that cultural history into contemporary visual art while adding her own interpretations of modern social issues.

From viral creativity to international recognition

Her work has moved well beyond social media. Ky has exhibited internationally and has been featured by major global media platforms. She also delivered a TED Talk titled “Wild, intricate sculptures — made out of my hair”, introducing a wider audience to the ideas and creative process behind her work.

Her artistic journey demonstrates how an everyday element of personal identity can become a powerful creative medium.

For Ky, the hair is not simply something to style. It becomes a canvas, a sculpture and a language through which she can speak about African identity, beauty, womanhood and social change.

Her growing international audience continues to show the power of creative storytelling, proving that art can emerge from the most personal and unexpected places.

The sentence was handed down by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) Court at the Ghana Police Headquarters in Accra, according to the information supplied to GhanaMedia.net.

The court, presided over by Her Honour Annette Sophia Essel, imposed the sentence after the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, urged the court to issue a deterrent punishment.

The prosecution reportedly cited concerns over the increasing prevalence of defilement cases and urged the court to send a strong message against sexual offences involving children.

A lengthy prison sentence

Charles Sedoh was sentenced to 35 years in prison with hard labour following the proceedings.

The case involved his two biological daughters, making the offence particularly serious given the relationship between the accused and the victims.

GhanaMedia.net is withholding identifying details about the victims in accordance with responsible reporting practices concerning children involved in sexual offences.

The sentence adds to growing calls for stronger protection of children and firm enforcement of Ghana’s laws against sexual abuse.

Protecting children from abuse

Defilement is a serious criminal offence under Ghanaian law, and cases involving children require careful handling to protect victims from further trauma and exposure.

Parents, guardians, teachers and members of the public are encouraged to report suspected abuse to the appropriate authorities rather than attempting to resolve such cases privately.

GhanaMedia.net will continue to follow developments concerning child protection, sexual violence and the enforcement of laws designed to safeguard vulnerable children.

Marry for Money or Love? The Question Dividing Hearts and Minds

0

By GhanaMedia.net

Marriage has long been described as a union built on love, companionship and shared dreams. But in today’s world, another question continues to spark heated conversations: Should people marry for love, or should financial security play a major role in choosing a life partner?

A striking image making rounds online captures the debate in a simple but powerful way. On one side, an older woman is pictured comfortably seated with stacks of money in front of her, while on the other, a young woman appears in a much more modest setting.

image
Marry for Money or Love? The Question Dividing Hearts and Minds 14

The contrasting scenes appear designed to provoke one question: Would you choose financial comfort or genuine love when deciding who to marry?

For some, financial stability is an important part of building a successful marriage. They argue that love alone cannot pay rent, raise children, handle emergencies or provide a stable home. From this perspective, choosing a financially responsible partner is not necessarily materialistic—it can be seen as a practical decision about the future.

Others strongly disagree.

They believe that money can disappear, businesses can fail and fortunes can change, but genuine love, respect, loyalty and understanding form the foundation that keeps couples together through difficult seasons.

There is also a middle ground.

Many believe marriage should not be reduced to either money or love. Instead, couples should look for a combination of emotional connection, character, responsibility and financial maturity. After all, a loving relationship can become difficult when financial responsibilities are constantly ignored, just as wealth may provide little comfort in a marriage without trust and affection.

The debate becomes even more complicated when age, social expectations and personal circumstances enter the conversation. What one person considers a wise decision may be viewed by another as a compromise they would never make.

Ultimately, the image raises more questions than it answers.

Would you marry someone you truly love despite their financial struggles, or would financial security influence your decision?

The conversation is open.

Grace Nortey became widely recognised during the golden era of Ghanaian television drama, featuring in productions including Obra, Osofo Dadzie, Taxi Driver and Thursday Theatre. She also appeared in several notable films, including Juju, Nana Akoto, Ties That Bind, Sinking Sands and Beasts of No Nation.

She was particularly known for portraying strong, outspoken and commanding female characters, becoming one of the memorable faces of Ghanaian television and theatre.

Her career also extended beyond acting. She hosted the radio programme Nyeawokoshie in the 1970s and was involved in advocacy for the welfare and professional development of Ghanaian actors.

Celebrated her 89th birthday in February

Nortey had only recently attracted renewed public attention after images of her surfaced online following her 89th birthday celebration in February 2026. Ghanaians reacted warmly to the appearance of the veteran actress and celebrated her contribution to the country’s creative arts.

Her reported passing therefore comes only months after that milestone.

Zoomlion Intensifies Disinfection and Disinfestation Exercise in Ahafo Region

Zoomlion Ghana Limited, in collaboration with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Ahafo Region, has intensified its ongoing disinfection and disinfestation exercise aimed at improving environmental sanitation and safeguarding public health.

img 4184

The exercise is targeting public facilities and areas identified by the Assemblies, including markets, schools, public places of convenience, refuse container sites, dumpsites and other public spaces.

Speaking during the exercise, the Ahafo Regional Manager of Zoomlion, Mr. Noble Nude, said the intervention had made significant progress, with teams successfully covering several designated locations across the region.

“The exercise has been very successful, and the cooperation has been encouraging. We have visited the identified areas and are already seeing the impact of the activities undertaken so far,” he said.

At Hwediem in the Asutifi South District, the District Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Yaw Adusei, welcomed the intervention, noting that several public areas in the district had benefited from the exercise.

According to him, although the district was not significantly affected by the recent floods, poor waste management and unsanitary practices could increase the risk of communicable diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

He therefore urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly and refrain from practices that could block drains and contribute to flooding, particularly during the rainy season. He added that the Assembly would intensify public education on proper waste management and expressed appreciation to Zoomlion for supporting the intervention.

Meanwhile, the Asutifi North District Manager of Zoomlion, Mr. Patrick Tetteh, has called on residents to keep their surroundings clean and dispose of refuse only at designated collection points.

Speaking during the exercise at Kenyasi, Mr. Tetteh cautioned residents against dumping refuse into gutters, stressing that such practices could obstruct drains, cause flooding and create breeding grounds for mosquitoes, thereby increasing the risk of malaria.

The Ahafo Regional Human Resources Officer of Zoomlion, Mr. Dennis Addae, also explained that the exercise formed part of the company’s commitment to promoting clean, safe and healthy communities.

He encouraged residents to complement Zoomlion’s efforts by adopting responsible waste disposal habits and maintaining good sanitation practices to sustain the gains made through the exercise.

The ongoing intervention demonstrates the importance of collaboration between local authorities, private-sector sanitation providers and communities in preventing environmental health risks and creating cleaner and healthier communities across the Ahafo Region.
