Legendary Ghanaian footballer Stephen Appiah has shared a heartfelt story of gratitude for fellow Ghanaian Mohammed Gago, crediting him with helping secure his first contract in Italy’s Serie A.
Gago’s Sacrifice for a Rising Star
Speaking after being honoured at the 2025 Emy Africa Awards, Appiah recounted how Gago went out of his way to ensure he got a chance to impress coaches at Udinese. “I remember I was with the junior side and hadn’t signed my contract yet. The senior side played a friendly against Sturm Graz from Austria. In the 80th minute, Gago Mohammed faked an injury for me to have the chance and feel of the game,” Appiah revealed.
Appiah entered the match and scored from 25 yards, an effort that made headlines in Italian newspapers the next day and led to him signing his first international contract shortly after.
Gratitude for Mentorship
Reflecting on his journey, Appiah acknowledged the many who contributed to his career, from his early days at Mighty Victory to teammates from under-14 levels up to the Black Stars. He said, “Every time I see him, I bow because I appreciate what he has done in my life.”
The gesture by Gago demonstrated selflessness and mentorship, key factors that helped Appiah adapt to a new country, culture, and football environment.

Both Stephen Appiah and Mohammed Gago went on to make their names at Udinese, becoming among Africa’s finest exports in Serie A.
