NPP Plans 38% High-Level Protest Against United States in Support of Ken Ofori-Atta

Party supporters liken move to earlier EOCO protest backing Chairman Wontumi

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is reportedly planning a high-level protest estimated at 38% participation against the United States, in solidarity with former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who is said to be currently in legal detention.

According to party-aligned sources, the planned demonstration is intended to register strong dissatisfaction with what supporters describe as external pressure and international interference surrounding the legal issues involving the former finance minister. Organizers claim the protest will be symbolic, strategic, and aimed at drawing both local and international attention to Ofori-Atta’s situation.

The proposed action is being compared to the recent protest staged at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in support of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. That demonstration saw a heavy presence of party supporters, senior figures, and sympathizers, putting pressure on state institutions and dominating national discourse for days.

Supporters of Ken Ofori-Atta argue that the former minister is being unfairly treated and politically targeted, insisting that due process and national sovereignty must be respected. They believe mass protest is necessary to show party unity and resistance against what they perceive as unjust actions.

However, critics have raised concerns about the implications of organizing a protest directed at a foreign country, warning that such actions could strain diplomatic relations and undermine Ghana’s international standing. Political analysts have also questioned the meaning of the stated “38%” protest figure, calling for clarity on whether it reflects voter strength, internal party data, or symbolic messaging.

As of now, no official statement has been released by the NPP national leadership confirming dates, locations, or the exact nature of the planned protest. Security agencies and diplomatic authorities are also yet to comment publicly on the development.

The unfolding situation continues to spark debate across political and social platforms, with many Ghanaians divided on whether street protests are appropriate responses to ongoing legal processes involving high-profile political figures.

Accra, Ghana — Monday, 22 December 2025

The asset freeze forms part of a broader investigation into alleged financial irregularities, fraud and money laundering involving Wontumi and his associated businesses. Authorities say the move is necessary to prevent the dissipation of suspected proceeds of crime while criminal and civil proceedings continue.

The freezing order covers multiple accounts and assets linked to Wontumi’s business interests, with particular focus on a large deposit held in his insurance company’s account. This action was reportedly authorized under relevant anti-money laundering and asset recovery laws.

Wontumi’s legal team recently sought to lift the freeze on one of the accounts, but the Accra High Court rejected the application, upholding the state’s authority to maintain restrictions during ongoing investigations.

The Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, has also confirmed that Wontumi and his company Wontumi Farms Limited will be prosecuted for alleged loan fraud, forgery and causing financial loss to the state, following findings that the farming project funded by an Exim Bank loan never materialised.

Supporters and political commentators continue to debate the implications of the legal actions, but the government says the enforcement measures are aimed at ensuring accountability and adherence to the rule of law.

Chairman Wontumi Faces Possible 106-Year or 25-Year Jail Sentence if Convicted

Ghanaian politician Chairman Akwasi Wontumi could face a prison term ranging from 25 to 106 years if found guilty of charges related to alleged illegal galamsey activities.

According to sources familiar with the ongoing legal proceedings, the severity of the potential sentence reflects the multiple counts of offenses Wontumi is facing, which include illegal mining facilitation and environmental destruction.

The High Court is expected to thoroughly examine evidence and witness testimonies in the coming sessions. Legal experts note that the case could set a precedent for strict enforcement against illegal mining operations in Ghana.

Wontumi has previously denied wrongdoing, asserting that all his actions were lawful and transparent. However, authorities insist that anyone involved in or facilitating galamsey operations will face the full weight of the law.

The verdict is highly anticipated, as it could have significant implications for political accountability and environmental protection in the country.

Attorney General Orders Chairman Wontumi to Appear Over Akonta Mining Case

The Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, has issued a strong directive to Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to appear before his office on Monday in relation to allegations of illegal mining activities linked to Akonta Mining Ltd.

According to the Attorney General, the state is determined to pursue the case without fear or favour, stressing that the laws of Ghana will be applied equally to all, regardless of political affiliation or influence. He noted that the ongoing investigation into Akonta Mining’s alleged operations in protected forest reserves has reached a critical stage, making Wontumi’s appearance a matter of legal necessity.

“I have ordered Chairman Wontumi to show up on Monday. Should he not, I will order his arrest. This is not an option but an obligation, and the law must take its course,” Mr. Ayine declared.

Akonta Mining Ltd., reportedly owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been at the centre of public debate for months following claims that the company was engaging in galamsey within forest reserves despite government’s ban on illegal mining. Civil society organisations and environmental activists have since mounted pressure on the government to ensure accountability and justice.

The Attorney General’s remarks appear to signal a turning point in the case, as critics have often accused authorities of shielding politically connected individuals from prosecution.

Mr. Ayine assured the public that his office would handle the matter with transparency and integrity, adding that no individual is above the law.

“The law is no respecter of persons. If Chairman Wontumi is innocent, the facts will show. But if otherwise, justice will be served,” he emphasised.

The outcome of Monday’s scheduled appearance will determine the next line of action, with the Attorney General vowing to pursue criminal charges if substantial evidence of wrongdoing emerges.
