Tennessee death-row inmate remains in critical condition after failed execution attempt, lawyers say
Tennessee death-row inmate Christa Pike has been taken to hospital after surviving two doses of the lethal-injection drug during an attempted execution in Nashville, according to her lawyers and US authorities.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The execution was halted after officials administered two doses of pentobarbital but Pike remained alive.
Pike Taken to Hospital
Pike’s lawyers said she was transported by ambulance to a hospital after the execution attempt.
According to court filings, Pike remained breathing and had a heartbeat after the two injections. Media witnesses also reported hearing her breathing and snoring during the prolonged procedure.
Reuters reported on October 1 that Pike was in critical condition and receiving life-saving medical care in Nashville.
Her legal team said they had not initially been informed of her medical condition after she was taken from the prison.
Two Doses of Pentobarbital
Tennessee officials administered two doses of pentobarbital during the attempted execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.
The Tennessee Department of Correction said it followed the state’s established execution protocol and that Pike was subsequently transported to an off-site medical facility.
Her lawyers, however, have raised questions about the execution process, including difficulties involving intravenous access and the condition of the drugs. Those claims remain contested, with state officials maintaining that the established protocol was followed.
Execution Halted After Pike Survived
Pike’s execution had already faced legal uncertainty earlier Wednesday after the US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily stopped the procedure.
The US Supreme Court later allowed Tennessee to proceed with the execution.
After the two lethal-injection attempts failed to result in Pike’s death, emergency medical intervention was initiated and she was taken to hospital.
Tennessee Suspends Remaining Executions
Following the incident, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced that executions scheduled in the state for the remainder of 2026 would be halted.
Lee also ordered a comprehensive third-party review to determine what happened during the attempted execution.
The incident represents the second failed execution attempt in Tennessee in 2026. Earlier this year, officials were unable to execute death-row inmate Tony Thomas Carruthers after experiencing difficulties establishing intravenous access.
Pike’s Death Sentence
Pike was convicted in connection with the 1995 killing of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer, in Knoxville, Tennessee.
She was 18 when the killing occurred and has spent approximately three decades on death row. She would have been the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than 200 years.
As of the latest reports, Pike’s medical condition remains serious and the circumstances surrounding the failed execution are subject to further review.
