AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has commissioned and officially handed over a US$1.1 million, 60-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital, marking a significant investment in maternal and newborn healthcare in Ghana’s Western Region.
The state-of-the-art facility was commissioned on July 30, 2026 under the theme “Strengthening Newborn Care Through Sustainable Partnerships”. The project is expected to improve the survival and quality of care for critically ill and premature babies within the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality and surrounding districts.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, Mr. Daniel Boadi, explained that healthcare professionals at the hospital had previously managed approximately 80 critically ill and premature babies every month from a single overcrowded makeshift ward.
“The clinical expertise was present, but the infrastructure was missing,” Mr. Boadi stated, emphasizing the company’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery within its host communities.
The newly commissioned Neonatal Intensive Care Unit features specialised newborn and premature care wards, a modern NICU clinic, Kangaroo Mother Care wards, a Mother’s Lodge, milk expression facilities, an in-house pharmacy and comprehensive infection prevention systems designed to meet international healthcare standards.
According to AngloGold Ashanti, the investment forms part of its broader healthcare support programme across its operational communities. Previous interventions include the refurbishment of the 20-bed Communicable Diseases Unit at Apinto Hospital, construction of community health centres and health staff accommodation at Teberebie, Adieyie, Samahu and Wangarakrom, donation of health monitoring vehicles, expansion of malaria control programmes across Tarkwa and Dompim sub-districts, and breast and cervical cancer screening initiatives.
Mr. Boadi also announced that the company will support the refurbishment of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Takoradi Hospital before the end of the year, further strengthening critical healthcare services in the region.
He noted that AngloGold Ashanti’s community health interventions have earned several national honours, including Mining Company of the Year at the 2024 and 2025 Ghana Mining Industry Awards, Best CSR Company at the Ghana Club 100 Awards and a Special Award at the Ghana Health Service Excellence Awards.
Mr. Boadi urged the management of the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital and members of the public to protect the new facility and ensure its responsible use so it can continue saving the lives of newborns for generations to come.
The commissioning of the modern NICU represents another milestone in public-private collaboration aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure and reducing neonatal mortality in Ghana.
