Baba Sadiq, Barbados Envoy Hold Abuja Talks on Trade, Tourism and Reparations

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu, has held talks with Barbados’ High Commissioner to Ghana and Nigeria, Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, as the two countries explore opportunities to deepen cooperation across several strategic sectors.

The meeting took place at the Ghana High Commission in Abuja and focused on strengthening practical collaboration between Ghana and Barbados.

Among the areas discussed were aviation and connectivity, tourism, trade and investment, education, culture, migration, security, reparations and multilateral affairs.

Ghana-Barbados Relations Gain Fresh Momentum

The discussions come amid renewed momentum in relations between Ghana and Barbados, with both countries seeking to transform their longstanding historical and cultural connections into practical partnerships.

Baba Sadiq noted that Ghana and Barbados share deep historical and cultural bonds, stressing the importance of building stronger connections that can generate opportunities for citizens and businesses on both sides.

The discussions also reflect Ghana’s broader effort to strengthen international partnerships around trade, investment, tourism and cultural diplomacy.

Aviation and Connectivity High on the Agenda

Aviation and connectivity were among the areas identified for deeper cooperation.

Improved connectivity between Ghana and the Caribbean could support greater movement of people, tourism, business and cultural exchanges while strengthening links between Africa and the wider Caribbean region.

For Ghana, stronger Caribbean connections could also create additional opportunities for tourism operators, businesses, educational institutions and cultural organisations.

Trade and Investment Opportunities

The two sides also discussed trade and investment, highlighting the potential for stronger commercial relationships between Ghana and Barbados.

Greater cooperation could create opportunities for businesses operating across agriculture, tourism, creative industries, education, financial services and other sectors.

The engagement comes at a time when Ghana is increasingly positioning itself as a gateway between Africa and international markets while expanding economic diplomacy.

Culture, Migration and Education

Culture and education were also included in the discussions, reflecting the longstanding historical connections between Ghana and Barbados.

Closer collaboration in these areas could strengthen academic exchanges, cultural programmes and people-to-people relationships while creating new opportunities for young people in both countries.

Migration and security were also discussed, underscoring the importance of coordinated approaches to mobility and regional cooperation.

Reparations Form Part of the Conversation

The discussions also included reparations, an issue that has become increasingly prominent in conversations between African and Caribbean nations over the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade.

Ghana has positioned itself as an important centre for engagement with the African diaspora, while Barbados has also been active in international discussions surrounding reparatory justice.

The inclusion of reparations in the Abuja discussions therefore adds a significant historical and diplomatic dimension to the relationship.

Baba Sadiq Begins New Diplomatic Chapter

The meeting comes shortly after Baba Sadiq was commissioned as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in August that Baba Sadiq had been commissioned alongside other newly appointed envoys and charged them with safeguarding Ghana’s national interests, strengthening bilateral relations and supporting Ghanaians abroad.

His appointment places a former media and creative-industry executive at the centre of Ghana’s diplomatic engagement with one of West Africa’s most important strategic partners.

Building Bridges Between Africa and the Caribbean

The Ghana-Barbados discussions point to a broader opportunity for stronger Africa-Caribbean cooperation.

From tourism and aviation to investment, education, culture and reparations, both regions have significant shared interests that could be translated into practical partnerships.

For Ghana, deeper engagement with Barbados could strengthen its role as a bridge between Africa and the Caribbean while creating new opportunities for businesses, institutions and communities.
