Viral Video of Handcuffed Man Sparks Outrage After Alleged ₦2 Million Theft Case Takes Dramatic Turn

A disturbing video circulating online has triggered widespread concern after showing a visibly distressed man, identified in multiple social media reports as Ekene Agala, with his hands apparently restrained behind his back while speaking emotionally on a roadside.

The case is linked to allegations that he stole ₦2 million from a woman’s shop in Enugu State, Nigeria. A post shared by verified content creator Mc Sharp claimed that the man had been “caught on camera” taking the money, although Mc Sharp also expressed uncertainty over his guilt, writing: “He may be innocent oh.”

Conflicting claims emerge over alleged theft

The story has since taken a more complicated turn. Separate online posts reviewed by GhanaMedia.net claim that Ekene Agala was accused of stealing the money from a woman’s shop and was subsequently subjected to severe violence. Some later posts allege that an investigation found him innocent, but GhanaMedia.net has not independently verified any official police statement or court record confirming that conclusion.

The uncertainty surrounding the case has fuelled intense debate online, with many users demanding that any alleged CCTV footage be released publicly or handed to investigators rather than allowing social media accusations to determine the man’s fate.

Video raises serious questions

In the footage shared online, the man appears deeply emotional and physically vulnerable. His posture and apparent restraint have intensified public concern over how he was treated after the allegation surfaced.

The video does not, by itself, prove whether he stole the money. It also does not establish who restrained him, when exactly the footage was recorded, or what official investigative steps were taken.

That distinction remains crucial: an allegation is not a conviction, and claims of innocence circulating online also require independent verification.

Calls for accountability grow

The case has renewed concerns over mob justice and extrajudicial punishment in Nigeria. Even where theft is suspected, guilt should be established through lawful investigation and due process, not violence or public humiliation.

Online campaigners are now pushing for greater scrutiny of the case, while social media users continue to question whether the accused man was wrongly targeted. One widely circulated post explicitly claims an investigation later found him innocent, but that assertion remains unconfirmed by an independently verified official source available to GhanaMedia.net.
