Ghanaian Engineering Student Builds Fully Functional 8-Bit “Computer Brain”

Tyrone Iras Marhguy Pioneers Transistor-Level Computer Design at University of Pennsylvania

Ghanaian computer engineering student Tyrone Iras Marhguy, currently pursuing his degree at the University of Pennsylvania, has achieved a remarkable feat in hardware engineering by designing and verifying a fully functional 8-bit computer “brain” from scratch.

Marhguy, a former Achimota School student in Accra, dedicated over 250 hours to build an 8-bit Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) — the computational core of a processor — entirely from discrete MOSFET transistors. His accomplishment marks a significant milestone in Ghanaian tech innovation and demonstrates the potential of hands-on computer engineering in emerging talent pipelines.

Understanding the 8-Bit ALU and Transistor-Level Design

Unlike modern processors manufactured in industrial settings, Marhguy manually implemented each logic gate — NAND, XOR, OR, and AND — to construct a fully functional ALU. The ALU successfully passed over 1.2 million test vectors, performing 19 distinct arithmetic and logical operations with precision. This project highlights the principles of transistor-level computer design and provides a rare, educational example of hardware engineering at the undergraduate level.

His work is expected to serve as a learning resource for students and professionals exploring low-level computer architecture and digital logic design.

Impact and Future Plans

This achievement positions Marhguy among young Ghanaian scholars abroad who continue to make global contributions in science and technology. Following the completion of the ALU design, he plans to:

  • Assemble the circuit onto a physical printed circuit board (PCB)
  • Perform soldering, debugging, and hardware testing
  • Explore optimization for educational and research purposes

His approach demonstrates how African talent can excel in cutting-edge hardware design, reinforcing Ghana’s presence in global technological innovation.
