Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, the former Genk forward suggested the decision to leave him out of the squad may have already been predetermined before discussions even took place.

“There Was No Miscommunication”
Paintsil rejected suggestions that the issue may have been caused by a misunderstanding between himself and the coaching staff.
“There was no miscommunication, but it was something that they already planned on,” Paintsil stated. “It’s not about my performance or anything like that.”
The Ghana international disclosed that the coach acknowledged his impressive attacking form, including his goals and overall contributions for LA Galaxy, but still insisted football goes beyond attacking numbers.
“The coach admitted I’m really good and scoring goals and everything, but the only answer he gave me was: ‘Football is not about goals and assists,’” Paintsil explained.
The comment left the winger visibly confused and disappointed.
“I was like, what is really going on? If football is not about goals and assists, then what am I doing here? There needs to be a tangible explanation for a player while you are not being called.”
Coach Reportedly Criticised His Defensive Play
According to Paintsil, the only concrete reason provided by the coach related to his defensive contribution during matches.
“He told me the only reason is I don’t defend,” Paintsil revealed.
The pacey attacker strongly defended his playing style, insisting his primary responsibility is to create chances, beat defenders, and contribute offensively rather than operate as a full-time defender.
“I’m not a defender, I’m an offensive player,” he said. “If it’s for me to defend, I will in certain situations because I’m quick and can take players on and make decisions. My aim is to help the team offensively.”
Paintsil added that while he is willing to track back occasionally, he believes asking him to constantly defend takes away his natural attacking instincts.
“I can track back, yes. But don’t tell me to be like a defender and put my attacking mindset somewhere else.”
Why This Story Matters
Paintsil’s comments could reignite conversations around Ghana’s tactical setup and player management ahead of upcoming international fixtures. The Black Stars have often faced criticism over squad selection decisions, especially concerning creative and attacking players performing well abroad.
With Ghana aiming to rebuild consistency and identity under the current technical team, public comments from senior players like Paintsil may increase pressure on the coaching staff to clarify selection standards and tactical expectations.
