Deadly Ambush on Mpohor-Tarkwa Road

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday evening at around 8:00 p.m., according to local sources. The attackers are believed to have strategically positioned themselves along the road, allegedly targeting a gold dealer who was en route to Tarkwa to sell gold.

However, before their intended target arrived, the robbers reportedly began firing indiscriminately at passing vehicles and motorbikes, turning the area into a scene of chaos and fear.

Victims Identified

The first victim, identified as Kwame Anumde, an okada rider, was shot and killed instantly while riding through the area. He was said to be going about his normal duties when he was caught in the gunfire.

The second victim, Benjamin Peprah, a nurse and resident of Mpohor, was also fatally shot while driving along the same stretch. He reportedly died on the spot.

Eyewitness Accounts and Confirmation

Residents in the area recounted the terrifying moments, stating that the robbers fired without warning at multiple road users.

A member of the Mpohor-Fiase Okada Association, Nana Andoh, confirmed the killing of the rider to journalists.

“On that night, at the Awonakrom School Junction, one of our members, known as Kwame Anumde, was shot dead by armed robbers,” he said.

Attackers Flee Scene

After carrying out the attack, the suspected robbers reportedly fled the scene before security forces arrived. As of now, no arrests have been made.

Rising Security Concerns in Mining Routes

This incident highlights growing concerns about security along key routes in mining areas, particularly roads frequently used by gold dealers and traders. Criminal gangs are increasingly targeting such routes, putting innocent civilians at risk.

Why This Story Matters

The killings underscore the urgent need for enhanced security presence on high-risk roads in Ghana’s mining regions. Beyond the intended target, innocent lives are being lost, raising serious concerns about public safety, law enforcement response, and the broader implications for economic activity in these areas.

Authorities are expected to launch investigations into the incident, while residents continue to call for increased police patrols and protection along the Mpohor-Tarkwa road.
